Today is St Lucie's Day. It marks the shortest day of the year in the old calendar - when people began to think they might hope again.
I happen to like this song on the theme, by Police Dog Hogan. The opening lyrics seem quite apt this morning:

Sorry to be a kvetch, and a nitpicker, but the Winter Solstice (“sun standing still” before it “moves” into longer days) is December 21st, which is the shortest day. (Summer Solstice is June 21st – the longest day).
But Santa Lucia/Saint Lucy IS about the turn of the year, and the return of light = Lux from which Lucia/Lucy/Lucie derives – an important matter in lands bordering the Land of the Midnight Sun.

Dec 13 was winter solstice in the Julian Calendar.
St Lucie’s day is the day before the evenings start to get lighter again. The sun continues to rise later in the mornings, making 21/22 the shortest day overall, but for those of us prizing the move to lighter evenings st lucies day tells us we’re now on the way
