Apple is issuing explanations for its tax jaunt to Jersey that are leaving people scratching their heads. There's good reason for that: the explanations make little sense without seeing the accounts of all the companies involved.
So here's an idea for Apple. I suggest that they issue a new app to be available free in the App Store. It will give instant access to all the accounts of every Apple subsidiary wherever it is in the world. And Apple's country-by-country reporting as well, come to that. Then Apple can really say its transparent and put all this hassle behind it.
Come on Tim Cook; you know this makes sense. And you could deliver it by tomorrow morning.
And other corporates might like to follow suit. Starting with Google on Android.

It turns out that Apple never even used Jersey in the end.
This shows the rubbish Panorama peddles out for it’s sensational programmes.
Jersey deserves an apology now.

My favourite was bashing the Queen. She invested into a HarbourVest fund which has the same tax outcome as if she had invested into a UK based fund. Media treat her like a criminal.???
And Apple doesn’t have $252bn in Jersey. I just looked at its accounts to 30/09. It’s complete nonsense. Jerseys cash deposits are £110bn. Surely someone would notice if $252bn rocked up.
Also, those various Mauritius employment structures they talked about haven’t worked for a good 6 years. They didn’t show any dates – they’ve either picked up on old structures or the people are illegally evading tax which will be picked up as part of Mauritius tax authority’s common reporting standard tax filing with the HMRC.
So why was Cayman used then

Id you cannot explain (and it is not the quality of advice: no one advises from Cayman) what was this about?

Its not just Richard Murphy, its pretty much everyone these days and. using a euphemism like “offshore finance centes”, well that’s just a dead giveaway.
We have just had an American friend of our daughter’s who works at Apple and has done so for nineteen years since he was eighteen . He loves Apple and its senior people. Nothing would make him believe that Apple is anything other than a benign enterprise . He refers to the likes of Tim Cook as ‘ Tim ‘ and Jony Ive as ‘ Jony ‘. That’s how it works at Apple ( up to a point – don’t stop every executive you happen to come across in the corridor just to say ‘ hello ‘ ) . The shenanigans of tax avoidance / evasion ( as all of us who read this blog know , for any global company avoidance and evasion are irrelevant technical niceties ) are part of the daily round of running a global business . Unless and until one single Western government takes a stand against this ( and who is likely to be the first ? ) none of the others will even hint at doing so. The UK is an important market for Apple , but not such that if ( unilaterally ) post Brexit, it decided upon some more stringent tax regime for multinationals that would have any real impact on Apple’s view of the World. This is about power and as it stands these companies are more powerful than any state government.
