An increase in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) tells me nothing about how I personally, may have benefited from the economy, if at all. Better metrics include:
Human Development Index (HDI) — Life expectancy, education, and per capita income.
Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) — Economic activity adjusted for environmental cleanup, crime, and income inequality.
Gini Coefficient — Income or wealth distribution across a population.
Gross National Happiness (GNH) — Environmental quality, mental well-being, culture, and governance.
The GNH is term was coined in 1972 by Bhutan’s 4th King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, who declared that “Gross National Happiness is more important than Gross National Product.”
