An old friend, Ian Fraser, who wrote a great book on the failure of the Royal Bank of Scotland, reminded me of one of my own tweets in a post he made on X today:
Another old friend and occasional colleague, Tim Bush (also a former chartered accountant who left in protest), had this to say in response:
I agree with Tim. There is negligence and contempt written all over this policy, and in the establishment appointments Reeves has made on tax.

I am writing to LINO today, thanking them for yet another addition to the armoury that will be deployed by people standing as independents…….against LINO.
Obviously, we need to get the narrative right ……………”Labour asks millionaire city slickers to tell them what to do” has a nice ring.
and:………. “Labour MPs take massive bungs from ultr-rich city slickers”.
Sir Starmer – thank you, please keep giving to independent candidates in this way – they need your help & are grateful. I mean this most sincerely. 🙂
(I have asked them to wrtie their own thank you letters).
Thank you and well said, Richard.
I have come across and / or worked with all of them and thought what the …
In addition to these people, one should not forget the private equity and banking types assembled by the Blair and Mandelson machines to advise the shadow Treasury, Business and Health teams.
Your point exactly Richard. Where are all those people and organisations who should be served by financial services, and who have been utterly failed? The ones who are being treated as prey, and then expected to pay for these institutions to be bailed out when they fail. The country is crying out for real investment and these are the people who have failed dismally as their business is primarily speculation.
I’d accept a few people from the sector on the group, especially if they were dissenting voices, but this is just a joke.
Well, at least now we all know exactly who Starmer was being introduced to at Murdoch’s London networking summer party. No more need to speculate. Worse than grim, a tragic political mistake.
Thank you and well said, Sara.
One can add the Spectator and Policy Exchange’s summer and Christmas receptions, well attended by the Blairite faction now and during the Corbyn and Miliband years.
Thanks for the info, Colonel. You never know when it might come in handy.E.g., in seeing through the smog of propaganda that currently seems to be the currency of Downing Street.
