Oh dear! More conspiracy theorist codswallop. With the exception of policing there is no difference in the Mayor of London’s powers and responsibilities in regard of the City of London than in regard of the 32 London Boroughs. The City Remembrancer no more ‘sits’ in Parliament than a journalist who sits in the Press Gallery or a Japanese tourist who queues up and sits in the Public Gallery. Businesses do not have votes, but appoint voters – individuals who vote by secret ballot in elections for Common Councilmen and Alderman. Not only are City residents apparently happy with the present arrangements, but the last time London Borough boundaries were subject to major revision the residents of a council estate in Islington successfully petitioned to be transferred to the City.
Respectfully, the codswallop as yours – just go and read Treasure Islands by Nick Shaxson
just because it says it one book – Shaxson’s (some of which, by the way, he has had to correct on his website) – does that make it true? There are papges and pages of lies being peddled about the City, very little of it is even half accurate. May I suggest you try and find the real truth about the City rather than the rubbish that you want to believe is the truth.
The research was done
The evidence was found
I’m pretty happy with it
Tell me why it’s wrong
You cite Treasure Islands in support of the audio without making it clear that you know perfectly well that said audio is based on said book.
The audio claims that the Mayor of London has “no jurisdiction at all over the square mile”.
The Mayoralty of London was established by the Greater London Authority Act 1999 c29. The introductory text of the Act states that it is:
“An Act to establish and make provision about the Greater London Authority, the Mayor of London and the London Assembly; to make provision in relation to London borough councils and the Common Council of the City of London with respect to matters consequential on the establishment of the Greater London Authority;…”
S1(1) of said Act states “There shall be an authority for Greater London, to be known as the Greater London Authority.”
Greater London was established by the London Government Act 1963 c33. S2(1) of the 1963 Act states “The area comprising the areas of the London boroughs, the City and the Temples shall constitute an administrative area to be known as Greater London.”
Both Acts are available for free at http://www.legislation.gov.uk
If statute law is not good enough for you then you could look at the Greater London Authority website where you will find a long list of “Planning Decisions relating to Corporation of London”.
It is pretty basic that apart from MPs the only people allowed in the chamber of the House of Commons are the Serjeant at Arms and the clerks. I have no doubt that the House of Commons Information Office would be more than happy to confirm that for you.
And that’s your proof?
One minor issue that relies on legal form not political reality
Oh dear.
Must try harder is, I think, the right term
