This morning I challenged the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales CEO, Michael Izza, to debate with me on the accountancy profession's attitude to offshore and tax transparency.
This afternoon he has blogged on the issue.
I tried to log in to comment. I used my membership details. And this is what happened:

Since when was I banned from ICAEW websites? And why? Maybe they'd like to let me know.
For the record this is what I would have said:
I welcome this. But as Michael Izza knows, I challenged him to a debate on the issue of tax and transparency this morning. I suggested we debate this motion:
‘This house believes that the ICAEW has a duty to promote tax transparency, country-by-country reporting, the filing of full accounts for all limited liability entities on line anywhere in the world that they are produced and that the full, verified, ownership of all limited liability entities be on public record.'
Warm words, such as those above, are not enough now. Our profession, my profession, is being brought into disrepute by the actions of members working offshore and that is not good enough. And whilst all this happens the value of accounts is diminished because they are hidden from view, which is not where they belong.
Now is the time for the profession to be forging a new role for itself, and for it to hide behind warm words about standards that are very clearly not working.
So I repeat my challenge to debate. Will Michael accept it?

I logged in using my ICAEW member details as it invited me to do and it then blocked me
Why was that?
Does the ICAEW always block members
If not, why me?
Your claims are not true: I am blocked from this site and nothing I can do lets me on
I presume that is deliberate
It is not my job to resolve this: it is yours
I pay substantial fees to the ICAEW each year to be blocked from its web site
Richard, you are not the only ICAEW member who is unable to comment on this blog item as I get the exact same message. I am clearly logged-in correctly as I am able to comment on other blogs in the Tax News community – just not this one. Very strange.

I am told it is being corrected
Hello Paul. The Tax Faculty and Moorgate Place subgroups are slightly different. Tax is completely open and joinless due to the many forums regarding HMRC service standards etc on which we invite the general public to comment. Moorgate Place, by contrast, requires users to join but by simply clicking a join button upon entry which should automatically prompt you. This is one of a raft of anti spam measures which serves to filter out bots which have been an issue in the past. You should see this button on entering the site, but if you can’t then there must be a bug in that system which I have now escalated to our provider. In any case I’ve sent you an invite to join the group. If you can’t see this upon logging in please let me know. Best, Oliver.
I’m not a chartered accountant, but am curious – does the chief executive of the ICAEW routinely agree to debate members if they ask for it?
If so, it seems a good of him to do this, though I wonder how he fits everyone in.

Thanks Oliver – sorry my mistake. I thought from this blog by Professor Murphy that there was some arrangement by which Mr Issa debates members if they ask for a debate.
It did seem an arduous commitment, but Prof Murphy has clarified that there is no expectation for Mr Issa to debate.
What an absolute aresehole you are, Murphy. The manner and way you have spoken to that chap is completely over-the-top and unjustified.
I used to have to deal with jumped-up, bumptious pricks (mainly barristers, but occasionally as it happens an account – which I believe you professed to be your profession at some point), like you in a job I had years ago.
