It's worth quietly noting this morning that when the Guardian first began its campaign to reveal corruption at the News of the World the Murdoch empire struck back, saying the Guardian was misleading the public.
It wasn't. It was undertaking absolutely vital, first class investigative journalism of corruption.
The world is in its debt today. I think that should be acknowledged.
Apparently it was, yesterday, by Rebekah Brookes: she explained to News of the World staff that the paper was to close because the Guardian had set out to get it. No it didn't. It set out to tackle corruption, expose breaches in the law and to uphold honesty in journalism. All the evidence is that Brookes knows nothing of such things but the Guardian does.
No paper is beyond criticism, but right now there is one paper that in the UK stands head and shoulders above the rest, and that's the Guardian.

Thanks for the reminder of that; less we forget of course little has changed substantially as “the Sunday Sun” will pick up from the N.O.W and while these grotesque issues will be legally played out over the coming months the domination of the Murdoch Media ( including the dreadful USA Fox News and The UK Sun and Times) will continue; its “discourse” of neo-liberalism, the state deficit, big tax burdens, public sector inefficiency , anti- Europeanism ( e.g. never looking at why Germany/France or Scandanavian economies do better) all of these will be still be there at both the top and bottom end of the Media Market. The Right has a lot to thank Murdoch for and they have done since the Thatcher era.
“the Sunday Sun”? Incorrect. The title of the new News of the World will probably be The Sun on Sunday.
The URLs TheSunOnSunday.co.uk TheSunOnSunday.com and sunonsunday.co.uk were registered just three days ago.
The URLs sunonsunday.org and sunonsunday.biz are both up for sale, though…
Certainly shows that mrs brookes not only has an extremely hard neck, but also a rather serious set of negatives.
From my journo friend Lazzaro on FaceBook: “Are they really defending RebekahBrooks? No, they are just keeping a firewall to avoid the **** hitting Murdoch – cynical as usual!” Now I think there’s something in that.
I rather wanted to see the Guardian this morning with the 100 point headline GOTCHA! :))
If it’s true that Brookes tried to shift the blame for the demise of the NoW onto The Guardian then such a distorted and dishonest view of the world goes some considerable way to explaining why she cannot see that it’s her career that should have ended and not those of journalists at the NoW. That said, assuming that her and James Murdoch survive the fall-out from the public enquiries and criminal charges of the next few months/years, I think we can safely assume that once this dies down they will be back with vengance fully on their minds.
Too true, I fear!
But maybe the climate will have changed?
But her career, and person, is worth so much more than a common hack.
Seriously though, soon Mr Murdoch will be in proud possession of 100% of the shares in BskyB.
He has, after all, rid himself of the crooks at NoTW so he is obviously a “fit person”
And do not forget, it will be OFCOM that decides….now, where do ofcom execs go when they get put-out to pasture ?
I also think we should congratulate Nick Davies the journalist at the Guardian who has been the main lynchpin of this story. Well done Nick.
Peter Oborne, Chief Political Commentator of the Telegraph, agrees with your sentiments.
In his article ‘Phone hacking: David Cameron is not out of the sewer yet’ he says:
“But now — brought down almost single-handedly by the brilliant Guardian campaigning journalist Nick Davies — Rupert Murdoch’s web is unravelling.”
Praise indeed from a rival newpaper.

Probably showing my ignorance here…but an organisation gets involved in criminal activities in order to sell more of its product in order to make huge profits…these profits are directly related to and dependent on criminal activities…is there any way that these profits can be recovered according to the law against benefiting from the Proceeds from Crime?
Just a thought…
i wonder whether people saw news night last night – the journalist attempting to defend the NOW practices caused more harm for his cause than good in my opinion
