Because nowadays the billionaires and the state are one.  The aura of “respectability” lingers over the state.  Any challenge to the execrable status quo threatens both the money and the state it had bought.
Bottomless pockets will always trump those at the pocketless bottom.
David Byrne says:
The oligarchs, billionaires, bond traders etc believe that they have power over the UK government, in reality, they do not.
Money and greed will attract our politicians like opposite poles of magnets. But the democratic vote can change the complexion of government.
