Courage too…
In his autobiography he explains his motivation for becoming more political in his songs. I still consider his Wrecking Ball album as one of the best indictments of neoliberalism and the factors behind the 2008 banking crisis. His recent EP from the current tour’s opening gig in Manchester is uplifting. It also very publicly upset the Orange man baby!
It is still a bit ‘hokey’ as they say – it is America after all on display here, but sincere for sure.
But I remember Bruce’s ‘Born in the USA’ album and listening to that – the title track was not a celebration of the U.S. but a condemnation; ‘Downbound Train’ was about a lost love brought about by huge socio-economic changes and pressures on relationships. The Nebraska album also looked at the dark underbelly of the U.S.
If this is what an epiphany looks like – hokey or not- I’ll take it and would only wish for more.
