I am pleased to report that I was told yesterday that I will be appointed as Emeritus Professor of Accounting at Sheffield University Management School on my retirement from employment there on 28 February 2025, with the new role commencing the day after.
For those not familiar with this role, it is, in the words that the university used to me, awarded “in recognition of your most distinguished services and contribution” to the University. Subject to my complying with the conditions attached to the role, it is granted for life.
The expectation is that the post-holder will maintain academic associations with the University, and that is my intention, as well as that of my colleagues. The post is not remunerated and is not an employment.
Thanks for reading this post.

As I suspected. But congratulations anyway. They would’ve been silly to lose you.
Thanks
Congratulations!
Hope it helps with media appearances post retirement.
That is one advantage…..
As importantly, it means I keep access to all the university’s facilities.
Excellent! Congratulations
There’s no remuneration, but an expectation that some time is spent maintaining your associations with the University. This sounds like the National Minimum Wage isn’t being paid, albeit by mutual consent.
No it doesn’t.
It sounds like volunteering.
“It sounds like volunteering.”
So selfless..the world can learn from you in so many ways
Brilliant answer.
Volunteering = giving something back.
Both sides happy with the arrangement and (I assume) the university still has you fill your previous position so no jobs lost.
Perfect for your (our) time of life.
Congratulations and well done.
Let me be clear, I won’t be doing the same job still. But I’ll be supporting colleagues until 2028 in all likelihood.
Many congratulations Emeritus Professor to be.
Thanks
Recently you looked at AI and what it said about you. This morning I asked AI about home somebody becomes an Emeritus Professor. AI said:
The title is usually bestowed upon professors who have retired in good standing and have made significant contributions to the university.
I like that word “bestowed”. Your new title is well deserved and your “significant contributions” via this blog are invaluable. Thank you.
Thanks
I liked that that someone pointed out to me that Emeritus is built around the word ‘merit’.
Congrats Richard
Hats off to you me boy!!
Thank you.
I could probably claim a professorial hat of some sort. I haven’t, I can assure you.
Congratulations Richard. It seemed obvious.
Thanks
Congratulations
Thank you
Good news on a gloomy morning. Enjoy the champagne.
Tea!
CONGRATULATIONS! Truly a sage now!
🙂
Heartiest congratulations, Richard!
A well-earned accolade.
Thank you
Congratulations Richard. Welcome to the club!
Thanks, Prem. Appreciated.
Many congratulations – and I hope today that you are feeling better. My Father was awarded an honorary degree by Sheffield University in 1967 – DEng. He would have been pleased to know of your award – and I too like the word Emeritus – you merit it.
Thanks
Thank you for the good news. Congratulations.
Thanks
I request a picture be posted of Emeritus Professor Richard J. Murphy of Accounting at Sheffield University Management School wearing his full academic regalia!
Congratulations!
I have none….
Can it not be rented at a costume shop???
What do you wear to commencement and other formal academic shindigs??
I avoid them!!
Attendance is voluntary so I volunteer not to go
Congratulations!
Thanks
And I know I owe you an email re your kind offer
So will BayTampaBay now be calling you The Minded-Absent Professor?
???
Congratulations.
Thanks
Congratulations.
Thanks
Many congratulations, Ricahrd. Good to see your contribution properly recognised!
Thanks, Bill. Appreciated.
Excellent news Richard – congrats!
Thanks
Congratulations. Sheffield City Council will continue to be reminded that the world is not flat.
I don’t know about the ‘e’ part but the ‘meritus’ certainly!
Congratulations!!
And my best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
I shall buy you a coffee… and hope you’re also feeling better (after your ‘duvet day’) and able to get out and see birds…
It was still a duvet day in part.
I gave hopes for the weekend. Tomorrow? Who knows as yet.
Many congratulations. It’s great that in addition to being so respected, you will also continue to have access to the university’s resources.
Thanks.
Well done Richard – deserved
Thanks, Robin.
Congratulations Richard
Thanks
Very well deserved! Nice to know they like you after all this time!
Thanks
As the parent is of a UoS student, I am so pleased that they have such good taste in public intellectuals.
Well done, and I do hope that you feeling better.
Thanks
Better, a bit?
And, I think they do like the public intellectual bit. Not many try it.
Congratulations and very much deserved. Do we call you Emo now?
No, Richard.
Great news, and well earned. Congratulations.
Thanks
Congratulations Richard. So very well deserved.
Thanks
Richely deserved and earned. Congratuations, Richard.
Thanks
Congratulations! I won’t say the title is exclusive (there are a few of us riff-raff as well) is is something that has to be earned. It is clear you have an academic reputation alongside the more polemic reputation from this blog and your other media output.
And I suspect there are many more interesting contributions to come yet.
Thanks, Jonathan.
Well done, a well-deserved appointment. I’m sure your desire to teach will continue to the benefit of all. Congratulations.
But it may well be haopening on YouTube now
A teaching channel is being considered…
Congratulations, well deserved
Congratulations!
Thanks
Many congratulations, much deserved.
Thanks
Congratulations, well deserved.
Craig
Thanks
Congratulations Richard.
I think you should hire and wear the hat at least once (although to be fair I don’t own the hat or gown my doctorate would entitle me to wear).
As I understand it “emeritus” means roughly “earned” or “having done sufficient service”. And well deserved given the work you have done.
Thanks Andrew.
I appreciate that.
Congratulations Richard and well done. I’m pleased for you.
Thank you
Congratulations Richard. Well deserved.
Thank you
Congratulations Richard!
I’m not surprised but I am delighted.
The emeritus status will no doubt add to and help maintain the established credibility of your pronouncements.
Thanks
