Good birdwatching at WWT Welney this morning. The black tailed godwits looked glorious. Six little gulls, dunlin, redshank and oystercatcher added to the mix. There were great ducks and 100+ whoopers still present. And it did not rain despite that sky. Well worth a visit.

Wonderful lighting conditions beautifully captured!
Looks like a beautiful spot. Given there’s no public transport, would you happen to know where the nearest bicycle hire is?
The corporate web-site says:
“WWT has four, wholly-owned subsidiary companies, each registered in England and Wales.
Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (Trading) Ltd carries out commercial activities, mostly retail and catering, at WWT’s centre. Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (Consulting) Ltd, known as WWT Consulting, provides environmental consultancy services. Wetlands Advisory Service is now dormant. Wildfowl Trust (Holdings) Ltd does not trade, but acts as trustee of property for WWT.
Each of the trading subsidiaries donates its taxable profits to WWT every year, under the Gift Aid scheme.”
It would be marvellous if you could get on the board, your influence would undoubtedly be valuable.
I have no time for that
And sorry – I am not even sure there is bike here in Ely
Littleport is the nearest station and I doubt there is any there. About a 5 mile cycle – almost entirely flat (this is the fens)
Taking bikes on trains is fairly easy around here though
What a beautiful sky! I live on top of the North Downs so the skies are less expansive and crowded in with hills, but I was delighted to be kept awake by the distant booming of a bittern in the wee hours for the last few nights. I am not far from a newly established wetland reserve at Worth and am hopeful that I might get the odd glimpse of a wetland bird on its way through.
I have niot heard a bittern this year as yet
But I did have a first house martin yesterday, which was nice
A really beautiful photograph! Thank you.
