Tories really are deluded. Listen to this video:
“Wokeness is causing a lack of hope and anxiety in our young people.”
Conservative MP Miriam Cates tells #TimesRadio that teaching “critical justice theories” in schools is contributing to hopelessness about the future in young people. pic.twitter.com/l6AgCNP520

According to Miriam Cates MP there is no hope for young people because of teaching about:
- climate change.
- racial awareness and equality.
- gender identity.
Together, she says, these are 'cultural Marxism', although she must know that this is an antisemitic trope because that has been pointed out to her many times.
The net outcome is, according to her, a fall in the birth rate.
I do wonder if Cates has ever met a young person?
Most are rightly worried about climate change. Being told by Cates, 'Don't look up', will not change that. They know the catastrophe that might happen within their lifetimes. The evidence is all around them. They do not need to be taught it. But she does not even credit them with the agency to think for themselves.
Most are also vastly more open to the mixed racial heritage of this country, and is virtues and benefits, than my generation were. I thought I was aware about this when I was young, but I went to university in an almost wholly white group of students right across my faculty. Not entirely, but very largely. It was much the same at my school. I just did not have the experience to know want racial identity issues were really all about. I had to learn that later, living in south London, where I finally came face to face with it, big time. But that is not the experience of the generation now at university, most of whom know that their friends are the very people that Cates and her cohort despise.
And as for gender identity: very large numbers of young people I know define themselves as gender fluid. They love people, not bodies, and may they are much more healthy for that.
I find Miriram Cates' view repugnant.
I find the casual antisemitism within it wholly unacceptable.
And I am certain that what she thinks to be of value - which no doubt means dutiful, loyal work, a mortgage, and unquestioning parenting - are all things young people rightly question the value of. Why wouldn't they when they have got us to the mess we are in?
If she and the opinion she represents are not in parliament in 2025, I will be entirely happy. They do not deserve to be so. And that is not a judgement based on prejudice. It is one based on the ability to think.

Honestly, I wish I could say shocking but it’s par for the course now.
I frequently end up pondering the question of how many MPs honestly believe this, and how many are just cynically leveraging it for votes? But then, while that may have a moral implication, it doesn’t really matter, because it amounts to the same thing: spewing useless, ignorant nonsense instead of doing anything to address our very real problems.
In summary you can definitely say the hallmark of a Tory is they are very definitely not “woke” when it comes to balancing their needs against those of others! Oddly too some also profess to being Christian like Rees-Mogg where doing that balancing is central to the creed!
A lots of views are down to privilege which we are blind to. You see it in some of the crass comments made by people who should know better.
Not enough money? Wasn’t it Lee Anderson who told the nurses that if they aren’t satisfied with their job, then they should just get another job.
The best out-of-touch comment I heard: why do people get a mortgage when paying cash is much cheaper?
The reference to “Don’t Look up” is particularly topical at a time the eastern seaboard of the US is blanketed in smog from burning wild fires.
Whether it is the wipe-out of common animal and insects species in the UK, record breaking high temperatures and droughts across the country, or ice caps melting at much higher than forecast rates, there appears to be no reality that the Tory party is not capable of denying.
Like other forms of lying, once you start it can be very hard to stop.
The youngsters I know have all signed a petition to stop Sunak from granting Johnson his list of lords. If that’s being woke, so be it. They accept people of all colours and faiths as being normal people, just like them, and as their parents were brought up to believe.
The youngsters I know watch Chris Packham and XR and believe what they say about climate change. They know that their parents and grandparents did what they could to teach them about climate change and how to mitigate it, and are still trying to do what they can.
Waking up this morning and hearing that if energy costs go down much more the government will stop the windfall tax just made me despair.
By the way, Miriam Cates is a member of CARFE, Conservatives Against Racism For Equality. I’d like to know how she squares that with what she said.
Miriam Cates certainly contradicts herself when she say she “accepts many pointes of view” but still insists that wokeness is causing young people stress and lowering the birth rate until challenged by the Times Radio presenter that she had no proof that the birth rate drop was caused by this.
We only have to look across the pond to see what may happen in the UK if the tories get their way.
Democrats labelled as lefties/pinkos/socialists
Overturning Roe v Wade
A very powerful media that is ostensibly anti-truth
A presidential candidate who rakes in millions every time he faces charges.
I fear for the UK but at the same time, I believe it’s time for England to go it alone.
The cancer of DoubleSpeak and smearing has spread from the USA to here and to some extent Europe. I get tired to asking people to define ‘woke’ or say what Critical Race Theory actually has as a goal. I don’t see any let-up, since both major parties are indulging in it now. Perhaps the kids of the generation I teach – mostly egalitarians – will change the world for the better. We have failed.
“Wokeness is causing a lack of hope and anxiety in our young people”
Rephrasing:
“Awareness of the need for justice and fairness and its lack in current society” …….is causing a lack of hope and anxiety in our young people
Of course Cates & other vile-tories would never phrase it like that because “wokeness” is used to obscure, not to illuminate. Only an imbecile would use such a word…….an imbecile like Cates.
My God?!
She’s advocating A Charter for Ignorance.
Deplorable creature………….. It’s not being ‘woke’ that is the problem.
It’s the lack of bloody response to the problems that are seen!!! Whether its climate warming or low wages with debt – our politicians don’t seem to want to address these at all!!
That’s what stops people wanting to have kids or losing hope. If you’d worked your nuts off to just to get some good grades to find that you’ve done all that work for what – minimum wage and less? And in debt up to you eyeballs in your early 20’s?
Well done Britain. Nice job.
Jesus Christ!! Will someone please shut ‘it’ up!! I mean she’s almost hysterical herself!
My generation were fearful of the bomb, yet instead of telling us not to worry about it, ignore it; they told us to hide under the staircase. Children today are going hungry, being deprived of a high level of education, in fact, not having a real childhood, and it’s the Tories that deny the facts, a total lack of wokeness, and who would expect them to do anything else.
