I posted this on Twitter last night:
It seemed that I was not alone in thinking this.
How has someone quite so talentless and apparently stupid got to be prime minister?

Looking at the twitter feed you were condemned by many for throwing out such a spiteful personal attack. And let’s face it whoever is the leader of the Conservative party your rhetoric would be the same. Dogmatic, bitter and twisted just about sums you up. And that sentiment was also shared by many on your twitter feed.
And 16,900 liked it
Whilst you, and they, failed to note the hurtful and spiteful attacks she had made on her school and the place where she grew up
And her parents, come to that
But you would, wouldn’t you?
PS I went to take a look – and struggled to find a critical comment
Ben delivers such sweet and unintentional irony in berating Richard for a “spiteful personal attack” whilst making one of his own. As such he’s sort of cancelled himself out.
I still maintain her parents were a lot to do with her gaining entry into Oxford. As a teacher I have educated far more intelligent and talented students fail entry into an Oxbridge university. As for her ability to gain the top job in the tory party, this has been largely down to the faction of the party more likely to gain traction from her inability to have independent thought. Brian Klass’s excellent book ‘Corruptible’ describes why the public vote for individuals not fit for public office, as this country has now seen so little leadership/intelligence in politics, I think it’s time to change the whole process and due diligence in individuals gaining political power.
How has someone quite so talentless and apparently stupid got to be prime minister?
Because her position is the choice of 80,000 Conservative party members. It shows the nature of their understanding and values.
Secondly, because of the structure of our constitution which gives a party with a minority of votes, the majority of seats in Parliament. Where an increase of a few hundred thousand votes changed the majority from no overall majority to one of eighty.
It’s also because the talent pool of the Tory party has been depleted of people of intelligence and principles. The culling of experienced, competent MPs by Johnson when he came to power was brutal and damaging to the wider polity as well as the Tory party. Dissenting voices are essential for healthy debate and to eliminate them from an active role in decision making will produce outcomes based on belief and ideology instead of rational thought, understanding and planning. Welcome to the UK of the 21st century.
How did Ms Truss become PM?
Because the tory membership, as a whole, dislikes brown people enough to bias the result against Mr Sunak.
Well said Richard to your detractor above.
Looking at the whole shebang – what the Tory party looks for when ‘talent spotting’ is people who are empty vessels, empty so that they can be filled with all sorts of their crap. People who can be programmed by extremists who go on to say and do frankly outrageous things in support of outrageous ideas.
I read an article this morning suggesting she should support electoral reform, as with FPTP she would not be PM.
This is more of a conspiracy type suggestion, but is Truss a political stool pigeon?
She’s been pretty awful so far, but she has reached the high of politics – she’s PM – No one would have thought that she would ever be PM despite her best Maggie Thatcher impressions. She has no charisma, no presentation skills and can change her mind in an instant. She’s also been to the Boris Johnson school of “if you tell a lie often enough, people will believe it because surely it must be true”. Right now she’s playing the I am a tough PM card, but rewarding the super rich might just even p-ss off the Tory shires.
Has she been set up to lose? The Tories must know what is coming, so losing the next election and letting Mr Wishy Washy Starmer rule for a few years, could mean another Tory landslide around 2027? By then, the Tories will have dropped Truss, she will have been beaten in a leadership contest by – guess who?
The prodigal returns.
Boris Johnson.
Meanwhile Truss rides off into the sun with a £10million book deal and various seats on the boards of old fossil fuel energy companies. Hundred grand a year for a few hours work a year from each will set her up nicely. Sorted.
