I loved this, said by Alexei Sayle on Radio 4 last week:
Austerity is the idea that the global financial crash of 2008 was caused by there being too many libraries in Wolverhampton.
Sometimes one line says it all.

Thanks for sharing that one Richard. Fortunately I live in the Yes City of Dundee here in Scotland and all our suburban libraries are still open. Our Council is SNP/Independent and it shows.
Damn! And here was I thinking that it was the public loo in Achnasheen that did it

‘Economic growth’ is the idea that building new runways, railways and motorways will generate enough money to pay for the damage done by air pollution and global overheating.

I like Alexei, much more now than when I was young, but I suppose he gets dismissed as an old ‘Trot’, or something like that, with outmoded ideas. I’m always fascinated by this idea of outmoded ideas, I must have missed the memo explaining why improvements in the general lot were outmoded. There also seems to be a dearth of new ideas, unless anyone still subscribes to rising tides and trickle down.
There are a few interviews with Alexei kicking around, well worth a gander, he’s a lot more thoughtful and far less frenetic than his onstage persona.
Many a true word spoken in jest……
