This got tabled by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez yesterday:
It does not mean it will become law.
But little by little, things change.
Thanks for reading this post.

It’s excellent
Real skill
The woman is as sharp as a blade, composed yet passionate, knowledgable, and if she has fears she certainly tames them very well.
She’ll go far if she stays the course, and keeps her head where it is, firmly screwed on shoulders. She has so many obstacles in her way, I hope she’s trained for steeple chase.
That Green New Deal is what we need here too. But we have no AOC…
Stephanie Kelton tweeted on that very subject yesterday, on how to afford it. I rolled up her thread, and it’s here https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1093575469440618496.html
Send it to Jonathan Portes….
Indeed.
From small seeds. This is such good news, we have to hope it passes into law.
Here is the Vox magazine report:
“There’s now an official Green New Deal. Here’s what’s in it.
A close look at the fights it picks and the fights it avoids.”
https://www.vox.com/energy-and-environment/2019/2/7/18211709/green-new-deal-resolution-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-markey
The article is extensive but it is essential reading.
Strongly recommended
I love this excerpt, a quote from Sean McElwee, ‘the director of Data Progress, a young think tank whose work has substantially informed the GND’:
“politicians who don’t support those (Green New Deal) goals aren’t progressive. We need to hold that line. Get on the GND train or choo-choo, motherfucker, we’re going to go right past you.”
I think that’s sort of attitude that’s required. it needs to be moderated with a bit of patience and expedience of course but the attitude is right.
I was amused by it….
I sent it to Colin Hines who co-ordinates the UK GND Group
Dave Roberts is one of the best writers around on energy and climate.
Last night I remembered seeing this a few days ago:
Rod White says:
February 5 2019 at 11:26 am
“Corbyn was talking of a phone call with AOC a few days ago, did they discuss macroeconomics?
Richard Murphy says:
February 5 2019 at 12:14 pm
I doubt it….”

On reflection, having now seen the Ocasio-Cortez’ GND resolution I have no doubt that they WERE talking about macroeconomics and Corbynomics in particular. How could they not be, all things considered.
That’s something to think about Richard.
BTW there’s no point in Googling this story. There wasn’t much coverage and the “anti-semitism” lynch mob managed to hijack the story completely, turn it into their own (they haven’t had much to go on lately) and kill it in the process. Which might be inadvertently convenient in a way.
Anyhow…
On that last point, we had previously observed that the timing of Portes’ (MMT “nonsense”) article was a bit odd and seemed to have come of out of nowhere in particular.
With the arrival of the American GND resolution that timing no longer seems odd at all. This whole episode: Portes’ article, the response that it was probably meant to provoke, the AOC / Corbyn phone call, is all on account of the congressional resolution. There is probably more to come.
BTW I also love the way that this US GND resolution ticks all of my required boxes including trade justice and anti-monopoly / competition policy. Two of the areas that the MMT contingent tend to neglect (monetary theories don’t cover everything).
If I had just one criticism of David Roberts’ Vox article it would be the way that it partially misunderstands the comprehensiveness and ambition of the resolution (rainbow unicorn?). It is not meant to be a readily actionable piece of legislation. It is a manifesto and a damn good one at that.
Hats off to Senator Ed Markey as well as AOC. Without his institutional skill, experience and involvement this wouldn’t have happened when it did.

As for this, well, its a start:

Although this guy doesn’t quite think so, he sees a McDonnell (equivalent) in the mix.

My take is on it that Pelosi is powerful and when she back-pedals you know that something is really happening there. The game is on.
