From the Observer's editorial this morning:
An awareness is growing across the political spectrum, and on both sides of the Atlantic, that a radical recalibration of capitalism is essential, not least because the wealthiest and least productive are in danger of allowing their own avarice to sabotage the very system on which they have become so hideously bloated.
Some of us have worked hard to create that awareness.
I really do hope that it is growing, and fast enough. The alternatives are to unpalatable to want to consider. But that's why radical is also the right word. Tinkering is not enough.

While I agree that there has to be defintion of where we want to go – I’m afraid that in itself is not enough – there has to be some thought as to what is the road map between A and B (or the tinkering that is required to be undertaken if you prefer). Idealistic statements of goals are not enough either – most people are wary of rapid change, and there is a need for democratic consensus unless you want to go down the ends justify the means path, which has always spelt disaster in the past.
If you look at what our oppenents are doing you will see that they are engineering a massive transfer of wealth to themselves by a continuos series of tinkering (what is the noun?) and because the Left are not engaging the argument at that level they are frequently getting away with it. One of the reasons why the perception on tax is changing is precisely because the spotlight is being shone on the tinkering that has occurred in individual cases – rather than the other way around.
What does recalibration mean?
re-calibration means redistribution. redistribution is an essential prerequisite to a recovery and stable economic system, but it has been made unpopular by the extreme right, so it will have to be re-branded.
I wish they would stop mucking about with my language. It is very confusing
