As the Guardian reports, the cost of the war in Libya is likely to be at least £1 billion.
But schools can be allowed to go to the wall.
Which is great in a town like the one where I live - where the nearest alternatives are 10 or more miles away.
This government is not just bad, it's mad.

Cameron, in his capacity as an armchair warrior, was hoping that the war in Libya would be his Falklands factor. Insufficient thought was given to the objective of this operation and the end result will likely be the complete trashing of the country from a combination of Nato bombs and a civil war. Are we ever going to stop this type of nonsense (the 21st century equivalent of Victorian ‘gunboat diplomacy’) which is costing a fortune that we cannot afford in the present circumstances.? We no longer have the resources to be a first rate military power, we need to acknowledge this and move on.
The UK is very much a first rate military power! Don’t believe everythign you read in the tabloids. Defence is a major part of the UK economy, along with finance, and pharmaceuticals.
There would probably be even less money for schools if it wasn’t for all those weapons, and other military hardware, developed in, and exported from the UK. There is no escaping the fact that the UK was, and still is, built upon warmongering.
I can imagine that the UK has no choice but to be directly involved in wars around the globe. How else can the UK stay at the forefront of defence contracting, if it never fights any battles? New weaponry, and all that defence technology is not worth much unless it has been tried and tested in real situations. e.g. Typhoon jets’ ground attack capability proven in Libya.
That’s the sad truth, real people are the crash test dummies in that industry.
