I recall in 1944 a long queue outside our local greengrocers spontaneously bursting into “Yes we have no bananas!” which they recalled from the 1920’s. Any advance on this? Something has to break soon, but what and when?
If I remember rightly Will Hutton posed the same question in an article in the Observer on Sunday, Richard. By the end of the summer it’ll be a different kettle of fish,I think. And with Britons on the march it’ll be interesting to see how far Cameron’s support for protests in the name of democracy actually stretches. Cant anyone!

Ivan, I doubt very much that Cameron will be so supportive of protests in the name of democracy when they are on his own doorstep. I seem to remember that Thatcher had a particular dislike of protest by the miners. Cameron is endeavouring to display statesman like qualities in his approach to Libya but I believe he is playing to the gallery. The bloodshed in Libya must be condemned but the struggle should be left to the Libyians, and the last thing that is needed is any direct interference from the West. Iraq should have taught us that democracy cannot be imposed from outside.
Hi Richard i know its nothing tio do with this subject but i just seen on BBC jersey news that the house of Lords had condemed the fullfillment in the channel islands even saying they have been caught smuggling into the UK and have now been caught out and the loophole is going to be closed OH WHAT JOY !!!!!!!!!

I know this is off topic, but yesterday I was at a seminar delivered by a well-known investmant company. Their account of Britain’s economic situation and the present deficit-driven economic policies could almost have been scripted by you, Richard. So for anyone who thinks Richard’s critique of this government’s economic policy is a fringe view driven by political hostility to the Tories, you are much mistaken.
