This whole thing looks pathetic.
All the tax evaders are getting are a few months house arrest here, a couple of years probation there. The most anyone is getting is three months of actual jail time.
The Swiss fugitives may have to limit their choice of holiday destinations (or settle for a place that is in no rush to extradite to the US, I hear Cuba has beautiful beaches), but they are well beyon the reach of the US justice.
The only one who gets totally jammed is the whistle-blower….
The IRS has succeded to demonstrate that (i) blowing the whistle is not a career enhancer, (ii) intermediaries don’t have much to fear as long as they stay offshore, and (iii) that even in the very unlikely event you get caught with a less than fully accurate tax return, the downside is very limited.
