Revenue data loss - who is really to blame?

29-Nov-07

I think the latest story in loss of tax data is illuminating. According to the BBC:

An investigation has been launched after the personal and financial details of more than 50 people [that] should have been delivered to the HM Revenue & Customs office in Cumbernauld …arrived at the headquarters of Insights Learning and Development Ltd [...]

Stop Branson getting Northern Rock

29-Nov-07

I note that the FT has reported that the SRM hedge fund has increased their stake in Northern Rock in an attempt to block the takeover by Richard Branson.
Quite right too. Branson should be blocked. He might play the white knight, but let’s be serious about what he’ll do to strip profit before any return [...]

On the ball

29-Nov-07

Dennis Howlett was on the ball whilst I was away in Brussels that last couple of days.
First about the Revenue’s data loss. As he rightly said, this is an IT issue, not a tax one. Second, he was spot on to say that the ICAEW is wrong to say

that the causes are likely to be [...]

28-Nov-07

It took fourteen months for this blog to notch up 200,000 reads.
It’s only taken three more to get to 300,000.
Thanks.

HSBC brings in $45 billion of SIVs

27-Nov-07

The FT has reported that:

HSBC has unveiled plans to take $45bn of mainly complex debt investments onto its balance sheet to end uncertainty surrounding its structured investment vehicles in the latest sign of the pressure banks are experiencing as a result of the credit squeeze.
The UK-listed bank said its decision to bail out its structured [...]

Jersey wants to renege on Tax Information Exchange Agreements

27-Nov-07

A fascinating article in the Jersey Evening Post yesterday. It said (sorry, no sustainable link)

Finance firms say that they are now losing business as a result of the various information exchange agreements on tax and regulatory matters to which the Island is signing up.

What they’re referring to are the Tax Information Exchange Agreements to which [...]

For the price of a cappuccino

26-Nov-07

There’s an article on the Guardian site under the title “For the price of a cup of cappuccino a week, we can have growth and a sustainable future“.
It’s by Ben Verwaayen, the chief executive of BT, who chairs the CBI climate change taskforce. The article reflects its manifesto for climate change.
And do you know what? [...]

Why not just abolish the domicile rule?

26-Nov-07

I am as amazed as almost every other commentators at Gordon Brown’s loss of a deft touch as prime minister. Take this as the next example. The FT has reported that:
An elite of wealthy foreigners living in Britain faces paying billions of pounds in capital gains tax on UK-based assets, under far-reaching legislation being drawn [...]

Jersey’s black hole

26-Nov-07

Jersey has published its budget for 2008, which includes forecast to 2012.
According to the budget all is well in the Isle. Having had a good 2006, with tax paid above expectation, it is forecasting much the same in 2007 (when tax receipts are based on 2006 profits). And it assumes the good times will continue [...]
