We have a really important event happening this evening, between 8-9pm. I'm going to be interviewing Richard Murphy about his work, about what politicians are telling us about public services, finances and debt, and why we need to understand all of this in order to demand better from our politicians. |

Finances can be a dry subject; but they are never dry when Richard explains them. Find his blog here and a critical page in the Taxing Wealth Report 2024. There are things that politicians are misleading us about, and Richard is going to explain it all clearly. This is going to be a fantastic event. After all, if we're going to fight effectively for the NHS, we need to understand the money side of things. |

I know that you are an incredibly compassionate group of people, because I spend all day speaking and listening to thousands of you online. Thank you for being incredible, and I really hope your day involves some moments of pause, cups of tea (or whatever you like), and a blue spring sky (after the rain). I don't know if anyone needs to hear this today, but we can create change if we stick together; we can make progress and we can force politicians into action. Don't ever feel hopeless, because you're not on your own. |

Sorry, Richard. I don’t think I made myself clear. I didn’t receive this posting on the 22nd, but on the 23rd, so I am a full day behind the first posting here. Maybe not everyone gets your postings on the day they are posted, for whatever reason. It’s not a problem for me, nor am I complaining, I just wondered why that should be so.

An excellent session last night and to hear the man himself in discussion. (I had just escaped from a 2-hour webinar on how to lobby the EU, which was still ongoing).
I was left with two thoughts.
1) Can we make a resolution NEVER to talk about “Government Spending”, but always call it “Government Investment”. As a semi-capitalist, when I buy a share, I don’t regard it as putting money into a black hole, I hope to gradually get more than my money back. It should be possible for all parts of the political spectrum to have a rational discussion on what makes a good or bad Government Investment. One of the take-home messages from EU lobbying webinar was the need to have really strong data. The case for Health Care has both a strict financial, and a quality of life component. Even if the opponents of adequate healthcare are still in la-la land, we still need cast-iron data with which to challenge them.
2) Since last night was an EveryDoctor event, I realised that we were looking at victims of “trickle-down management”, which is as big a fallacy as “trickle-down economics”. Conventional wisdom is that we should bring in highly-paid experts who have never done the job, to tell people who are doing the job “this is how to do it”. The NHS needs a massive dose of “trickle-up management”, listening to those who are actually trying to make things work. The price of “trickle-up” is that everyone, at every level, has to go beyond the minimum, to keep themselves better informed about what others are doing, and how they do it. (And not engage in turf warfare).

Remember, by your own analysis, when a state pension is spent, the money moves into the economy, and gradually comes back to the Government as tax. An investment in probably one of the most useful parts of the economy.

When I worked with the NHS in the early 80’s there was a 4 person Regional management team, RMO- Regional Medical Officer (a consultant obs and gynae who moved into management) RNO – Regional Nursing Officer (a senior nurse who moved into management) RT – Regional Treasurer, not sure of their background, and another whose title excapes me. The point being that all had practiced their specialisation before managing. The structure was replicated at Area and District level. Seemed to work perfectly well then.
