There's a chance we might get some good news today.
Viktor Orbán might lose the Hungarian general election, proving that democracy can, perhaps, overthrow fascism.
On this particular front, I am living in hope.
It would be stunning if we found out that this is possible, but do not expect Orban to go quietly even if he loses. Putin and Trump want him in power, and will fund whatever he wants to do next. We will learn a great deal about the true state of the world beyond the Middle East over the next few days as a consequence.

Yes let us hope the electorate will remove him although it appears the system is gamed to give Fidesz lots of seats. I am concerned that in previous elections here and in Poland that the media here and elsewhere thought that right wing populists would lose they did not – presidential election in Poland being a good example. Orban has also taken over most of the media and state apparatus which will make it difficult for a new government to make changes. But lets hope for the best.

Thank goodness the Hungarian people can still vote.
But it is all mixed up, all convoluted. Western capitalist models – liberal democracy I think they call it – is so easy to be cynical about them/it and the cynicism is not misplaced either.
For me, the real question is where does the politics of care have more of a chance emerging I suppose? I think that the answer to that is obvious, as fascism is death.
Hungary”s 1m Roma may help defeat Orban but whether they will benefit from his long awaited downfall is another matter.
