I think I should make it clear when posting this copy of a Tweet that I am a member of Republic, which posted it, but apart from paying a small subscription, I take no part in it. It does, though, make it clear why Republic capture the zeitgeist, why the royals' only special talent these days is in creating PR disasters, and why we should all really want them gone:

Prince William is, quite bizarrely, taking on the role of British trade envoy vacated by Andrew Mountnatten-Windsor, and his first visit is to people closely associated with the killers of Jamal Khashoggi in 2018.
You literally could not make up a worse framing for the royal family than this right now. Do they have a self-destruct button? It would seem they do.

If we were not so dependant on oil we would not have to grovel to the Saudi’s (Other unpleasant regimes are available)

I too am a non active member of Republic. Graham Smiths book does an excellent job of setting out the reasons why the Monarchy should be abolished. From my perspective underpinning the factual argument is the corrosive cultural and mindset drag the Riyal Family have had. It’s time to modernise with an elected head of state who is part of the people not aside from the people. There are some good role models !
Agreed

I assume he has been urged to do this by the government.
The Queen had to have tea with quite a range of despots.
It leaves a very unpleasant taste in the mouth, and along with the history of AMW being trade secretary (qualifications? What qualifications) it does no favours for the Royal family, quite the opposite. But let’s also be realistic: if there was no royal family there would still be a delegation despatched to break bread with abominable regimes. It’s dirty business and someone will end up doing it.
This young royal’s uncle(?) is implicated in sex trafficking young women.
He is visiting a kingdom that kills journalists.
Given the stench of everything, both households seem to be in good company to me.
