I posted this on X this afternoon:

So, here is the question: are the Tories callous, stupid or just bastards, as well as totally economically ignorant as to how government is financed?

If you had a vote on this one, I think “All four” would win.
I think so
I would go for all four

‘Just bastards’ is good enough, but ‘death cult’ is just as applicable.
Q. Are the Tories callous, stupid or just bastards, as well as totally economically ignorant as to how government is financed?
A. All of the above.
BUT people still vote for them in quite large numbers. In the Kent CC bye election this week they were third behind the Greens and Reform. Labour was fourth. I don’t understand people.
Me neither
I note the near-identical message emanating from the White House. On April 2, 2026, at a private Easter luncheon, Trump stated the federal government cannot afford to fund social programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and daycare while “fighting wars,” stating these responsibilities should shift to states. He ordered the Office of Management and Budget to cut funding of day care. Trump says he wants to raise defense spending to $1.5 trillion while cutting non-defense spending. https://www.cnn.com/2026/04/02/politics/donald-trump-iran-war-daycare
This is the Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher policy risen from its grave. (Full disclosure: Reagan’s Treasury Undersecretary for Tax Reform and Domestic Policy and author of his 1981 tax cut was my father.)
Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher coordinated economic ideology and fostered a “special relationship” based on shared free-market principles during the 1980s.
A few results of “Reaganomics” :
Federal funding for social welfare programs, including low-income housing and food stamps, was reduced by roughly $22 billion.
The US national debt nearly tripled, growing from $997
billion in 1981 to
$2.85 trillion by 1989.
A few results of Thatcher’s economic policies:
Steep decline in manufacturing and coal mining
Recessions in the early 1980s and 1990s, causing unemployment to rise higher than it was when she took office.
Trade unions castrated.
I would not be shocked to learn that there was coordination between Badenoch and Trump on this policy message, despite her protestations that she is unsettled by some of Trump’s vulgarity.
People’s motives for sociopathic behavior: MICED: Money, Ideology, Corruption, Ego, and Death Threats, as they say in the spy business.
Thanks
“economically ignorant” publicly – because they must keep the rabble in line and thus the myths going.
Privately, I’m guessing that those that are not semi-functional village idiots would accept the explanation that MMT provides.
Tories buy their hypocrisy wholesale & compete in the market with LINO and to some extent the Lib-Dems.
I know……….
Is Kemi’s surname actually ‘Badenough’?
Many Many years ago during the Thatcher era I saw a cartoon
TV Journalist So what do you want from this election
Scabby Punk Riots! The overthrow of the Monarchy! The Crushing of the Ruleing Class!
TV Journalist So who will you be voting for then?
Scabby Punk Conservative of course
In response to the “I don’t understand people” comment – it’s actually simple psychology – parents with Self Interest’ stamped large on their forehead spend long days/years ensuring their offspring adopt that same outlook
