I want to say thank you to all who came to yesterday's event in Cambridge.
There were 180 people present. It was a capacity crowd.
As far as I can tell, from what many people said, it was a really good session. Across the whole team, we heard only one slight complaint, which was that I was not always technical enough. For a large crowd, not all of whom are experts, that was a decision, not a mistake. So, I am relieved. I can show confidence. It is bult in a solid foundation of worry.
My thanks then to:
- Clive Parry, who was brilliant.
- To John Christensen, for joining me for the last session and for supplying support, as ever.
- To my son, James, whose idea this was and who did a lot of work to make it happen.
- To Tom, for videoing and also worrying about all the details, as I can rely on.
- To Ed 'Murphy' (for the day: you had to be there to understand the joke), who joined in for the day, and offered his calm help.
- To Jacqueline, who is the bedrock of what I do, and whose enthusiasm and active support for my work are more important than most people realise.
And then my thanks to all who asked questions and the many more who wanted to when we ran out of time.
Thanks as well to those who bought the merchandise. We sold out of everything we took. We could have sold a lot more mugs. Maybe we should sell them online.
Will we do more? Not today. I am feeling physically tired. The adrenaline ran well into the night. I stood, talked, thought, and performed, having to think with a lot of care about the exact next word for six hours, and it's been a while since I have done that for so long. But I enjoyed it. This week, we will look at potentially doing this again. Leeds is the most likely next venue.
So, thank you, all.
And this was the team, after the event:

Tom, James, me, Jacqueline and Ed.

Richard and team Murphy, a great day, thoroughly informative, enjoyable and nice to say hello to you and Clive.
Please don’t worry about not being “technical”.
It was great to chat to other attendees.
As you said, we need to frame our stories with a solution, plus look to support each other in our areas especially to promote John’s latest film “the Finance Curse”.
Thanks
‘Team work makes the dream work’. Well done. Sorry I could not join you…this time.
[…] was a little distracted yesterday and did not have time to comment on what was going on in Iran and the broader Middle Eastern […]
A brilliant day, thank you Richard and all of the team! I think a live event generates a kind of energy that you can never get online… and will have ripples! So definitely to be repeated.
Thanks also to Clive Parry for helping me to finally understand what a bond is!!
Yay!
And thank you. You definitely brought energy. I hope you get a group op together. Let me know.
Thank you for the amazing and uplifting news and beautiful photo. Congratulations. Enjoy some rest.
Thanks, Colonekl. Having coffee in the glorious sunshine with 8 cattle egret nearby right now.
The event was excellent in terms of both the organisation and its delivery.
We live in hope and such a gathering brings to life the stories that we must collectively build upon and spread.
My thanks to you and Team Murphy.
Thank you, Stewart.
I literally ache this morning. But it was worth it.
A big thank you Richard to you and your team. An excellent day, informative, thought provoking and extremely uplifting. And great to meet so many people and exchange thoughts and ideas.
Thanks, Rosa
Thanks for sharing the recap—it’s clear how much thought and effort went into making the event both engaging and accessible. It’s great to hear that the session resonated so well with the crowd, and your reflection on balancing technical depth with broader understanding really speaks to the challenge of these kinds of discussions. Looking forward to seeing what comes next from your team.
Thanks for posting the lovely picture of your lovely family.
You should me them 🙂
Again thank you so much.
It was nice to be witnessing a meeting where all the ‘greying heads’ were not in a Reform or Tory party assemblage for once!!!! And I had lots of discussions with people my age and younger too, which was great and very heartening. We are not just all grumpy old men…………..and women.
I had two questions I wanted to ask.
The first is a really very technical question……………….are your mugs dishwasher safe? I could do with another two for my kids. Leeds maybe?
Question two – which I formulated whilst at the meeting (probably why I missed some things too): Given the unpopularity and misunderstanding of tax in the populace, has any thought been given to a ‘popular’ (joyful even) tax strategy of some sort – what it might look like, if it were felt to be relevant etc? I think it might……….
My offer to help proof read event publications is still there and – I understand – under tight deadlines.
Networking – excellent idea – I am based in Derbyshire, I think someone else was too?
Bless you all.
PSR
Thank you.
The technical question: I have one that seems to be doing just fine with the dishwasher. We are getting more.
All the rest noted. And yes, I may take you up on the offers.
Best
Richard
PSR: I think you’re aware from yesterday that there’s a small group in Sheffield, so depending on ‘where in Derbyshire’ I’m sure you’d be welcome if it works practically.
Three of us shared the same trains home and discussed possibilities for John Christenson’s film amongst other things.
And Richard, family, team: I’ll add my word of big thanks! Rest well.
Thank you
I slept for 2.5 hours after lunch. I am feeling better, but still aching, now.
I saw the photo and thought, “Give thanks for the Murphy family!”
I do, often.
Thank you Richard, Jacqueline, James, Tom and Ed
Really good event, with just the right balance of technical detail and discussion. I was delighted to see so many Greens there! I wanted to ask you, if we continue growing and getting more success at the ballot box, what sort of reaction do you think we’ll get from the billionaires, big corporations, banks and the media that serve them? And how should we prepare to cope with it?
I loved your answer to the question about what we should all do to effect the change we want – become an activist! Although I feel I already am, I have thought about what more I should be doing. As a result of meeting Lorna from Lewisham at the event, I have now applied to join the Economics Policy Group of the Green Party to give more backing to the MMT team there.
We’ll also work on getting a filming of John’s latest movie in our local party.
Finally I just wanted you to know that James is a real asset in the local party, and his organisation of your event shows me what a huge impact he could have in it in the future!
Regards…Bob Ensch
Many thanks, Bob.
And thanks for your support for James. I can tell you, he appreciates it.
So glad the event went so well. Congratulations to Team Murphy !
🙂
I was too far from Cambridge to attend, but it’s really lovely to see the picture and know your whole family was involved. Also for you to acknowledge how much Jacqueline is a part of this work. Like Hannah’s win it’s good to see some positive things in our country after years of austerity and being told there is no alternative. We can and will do better.
Thanks, Hazel.
A successful event and an enormous big thank you to the whole team as well as to John and Clive for their invaluable contributions.
Also very helpful, but I’m not sure why, to have faces to name!
Agreed
We hardly spoke, but it was good to see you.
Such a super day. I left enthused.
And, at last , understanding why Callaghan went to the IMF for a bailout…I’ve often wondered. Thanks for that!
Not surprising you’re knackered…that was some input from you. Great to meet you all.
Only just got home to Totnes….rail problems.
Laurie
Many thanks for coming
Thanks for your enthusiasm
Sorry the trains were so bad
As I keep saying, we need to invest
Go well
Richard
Congratulations and many thanks to you, your colleagues and your team, Richard, for an excellent event. It was very thought provoking and also encouraging to be made aware that there are a good number of people who all see the mess we are in as a country and are open to the actually sensible solutions which you and your colleagues define and offer. If this is regarded as a “seed event” then yes, mighty oaks from acorns grow!
To conclude, a fun fact.
My drive to Cambridge, then home to Wigan began and ended with the slip roads of Junction 25 of the M6, which start and finish in the constituency of one Josh Simons MP. Enough said!
🙂
Thanks, Karl.
