It will be interesting to see if Your Party will be able to gain any traction in the local elections later this year. Now that they have had their teething troubles and sorted out their leadership, maybe they will come up with a good manifesto. Corbyn, sadly, will not be an asset, nor would Mahmoud.
Having said that, I was a member of the Labour part for 40 years until last year, and am only too aware of the splitter narrative. Only this morning I saw reference to Momentum in the Guardian. Who knew they still existed?
Add in the inevitable media distortion of whatever Your Party or the Greens put forward, and it will be hard work for us on the left to make progress.
Tactical voting will be key, and getting the message out there even more so.
I think Chantal Mouffe from my alma mater has worked on this ‘Left meets the Green’ agenda – arguing that a left populism could come out of the need for environmental protection, extending to ‘people protection’ and I think she will be watching the UK Greens with some interest.
Moreover, the fact that Starmer basically turned his back on green issues when a formidable female advocate of the Left was advocating for closer ties tells you all you need to know about the lack of political imagination of the Labour Right and Left?
Stick a fork in their arse and serve up – Labour are done.
I do so agree – no time to be complacent. It’s a little like the US, the tide seems to be turning but still so many supporting Trump!
I think the biggest barriers to change are the mainstream media and big tech – we need more journalists who are prepared to challenge the current dominant narratives. Most people don’t have the time, energy or motivation to delve behind the neoliberal facade.
Assumptions are dangerous and can kill you or your collages, as a mining engineer I know that only to well. At least in politics you only loose your reputation.
We musnt forget that 14% of the electorate voted reform
According to St Fart-rage, Ms Spencer is “hard left” – a hard left plumber & plasterer. Tut tut. oh & we “need to clean up the voting system” cos poor Matty did not win & it is all so unfair. Be interesting to see how the MSM interpret it all. St Polly was beside herself in the G’ (snigger).
In some respects, it was all quite clear in 2017 – when Labour under Corbyn came within a whisker of winning power on the back of a manifesto that was not a million miles from what the Greens are in favour of (that said the finance element seems to be more sensible under the Greens – or at least pointing in the right way).
One by-election does not an electoral revolution make – but things are looking quite good. Even LINO MPs (McSweney Placepeople) are starting to break ranks, wonder what their post bags are saying? (“I’ve been a life-long labour supporter – either Labour changes or the greens get my vote” – style of).
The pivot from legitimatie concerns about immigration now stretch to legitimatie concerns about plumbers. They are taking over our pipes and stealing our leaks.
The “double down + a smear or two” response from Starmer today, after being unambiguously rejected by voters yesterday, shows that he definitely doesn’t “get it”.
‘Labour vows to “keep fighting’ ”
No change there then.
It’s a pity their understanding of “keeping fighting”, involves repeatedly punching themselves (and their voters) in the face.
