I think this is the best summary of what happened at the G7 security summit this week. It comes from Politico in the USA:
Pentagon policy chief Elbridge Colby earned praise in the corridors of the grand Bayerischer Hof hotel for conciliatory remarks that called for the U.S. and its allies to work together to secure Europe.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio received a standing ovation when he said in his Saturday speech to the conference: The U.S. and Europe “belong together.”
But between the backslapping in the hallways and swigs of mai tais at Trader Vic's, a tiki bar inside the Bayerischer Hof … European officials vented. The tone from the U.S. had changed, attendees said, but the perception that the Trump administration would like to see a Europe whiter and more right-leaning had not.
I added the emphasis. I did so for good reason. This is what Rubio was really saying. It was very clear. The three messages were:
- Join the US in a fascist project.
- Discriminate against migrants if you do.
- If you don't do either, you're on your own.
That was it. Sometimes it is not hard to decode diplomatic language. In the case of the Trump regime, it is easier than in most cases.
And it is this policy that Starmer says we must align with, calling the Greens a threat for describing it exactly as it is, which is the language of far-right fascism.

When I heard Rubio talking about Europe’s past, all I could think of were the millions of people who have been killed on the continent through conflict and why the EU was set up in the first place.
The American lurch to authoritarianism – like all authoritarianism – is always ahistorical in nature.

I think there are two alternatives:
1. Ride it out until Trump is replaced, surely the next President will be more presidential.
2. Don’t rely on the USA, look to the Rest of the World for better security, commerce and understanding.
The next president might be Vance or a son of Trump.
If he has his way, the next president of the USA will be Donald J Trump.
Agreed.
But will he live that long?
Rubio, a white Cuban fascist. The Cuban bit is important – pre the revolution black cubans were second class citizens – oppressed by whiteys like Rubio’s family – who departed for pastures more racist after the revolution.
My business partner employsa a non-white non-European. He is far brighter than me (speaks/writes excellent English – his 3rd language – after Chinese – his second) and has forgotten more than gormless bastards like Rubio know. The UK and the EU need to cut off all ties with the fascist Americans. This needs to be part of any party’s manifesto if they want my vote.
(& I am puzzled why the fascist got a standing ovation).
Rubio’s next visit has been to Fico and Orban.
I think that tells us a lot.
