This ridiculous motion was passed by the US Congress yesterday (since the Senate apparently approved this resoltuon by the House), timed as a snub to newly elected Democrat Mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, who just happened to be visiting President Trump:
Whereas socialist ideology necessitates a concentration of power that has, time and time again, collapsed into communist regimes, totalitarian rule, and brutal dictatorships;
Whereas socialism has repeatedly led to famine and mass murders, and the killing of over 100,000,000 people worldwide;
Whereas many of the greatest crimes in history were committed by socialist ideologues, including Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, Fidel Castro, Pol Pot, Kim Jong Il, Kim Jong Un, Daniel Ortega, Hugo Chavez, and Nicolás Maduro;
Whereas tens of millions died in the Bolshevik Revolution, at least 10,000,000 people were sent to the gulags in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and millions more starved in the Terror-Famine (Holodomor) in Ukraine;
Whereas between 15,000,000 and 55,000,000 people starved to death in the wake of famine and devastation caused by the Great Leap Forward in China;
Whereas the socialist experiment in Cambodia led to the killing fields in which over a million people were gruesomely murdered;
Whereas up to 3,500,000 people have starved in North Korea, dividing a land of freedom from a land of destitution;
Whereas the Castro regime in Cuba expropriated the land of Cuban farmers and the businesses of Cuban entrepreneurs, stealing their possessions and their livelihoods, and exiling millions with nothing but the clothes on their backs;
Whereas the implementation of socialism in Venezuela has turned a once-prosperous country into a failed State with the highest rate of inflation in the world;
Whereas President Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence, wrote, “To take from one, because it is thought that his own industry and that of his fathers has acquired too much, in order to spare to others, who, or whose fathers have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association, the guarantee to every one of a free exercise of his industry, and the fruits acquired by it”;
Whereas President James Madison, the “Father of the Constitution”, wrote that it “is not a just government, nor is property secure under it, where the property which a man has in his personal safety and personal liberty, is violated by arbitrary seizures of one class of citizens for the service of the rest”; and
Whereas the United States was founded on the belief in the sanctity of the individual, to which the collectivistic system of socialism in all of its forms is fundamentally and necessarily opposed: Now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring), That Congress denounces socialism in all its forms, and opposes the implementation of socialist policies in the United States.
Passed the House of Representatives November 21, 2025.
Have none of the lessons of McCarthyism been learned?
Have none of these people read a book, including the Bible of which so many of them claim themselves to be so fond?
Have none read their own constitution?
Do any of them know what socialism actually is?
It would appear not.

Another brick in the wall. A gigantic spanner in the works. I will be watching Robert Reich’s Coffee klatch later. He remembers the end days of the McCarthy era.
I will also be watching it later. I almost invariably do.
Just substitute capitalism for socialism and there’s not much difference. None so blind….
“Whereas capitalist ideology necessitates a concentration of power that has, time and time again, collapsed into fascist regimes, totalitarian rule, and brutal dictatorships;
Whereas capitalism has repeatedly led to famine and mass murders, and the killing of over 100,000,000 people worldwide;
Whereas many of the greatest crimes in history were committed by capitalist ideologues, including Lyndon Johnson, George Bush, Tony Blair…..”
Very good
And astonishing lack of self awareness – no mention of the deaths and cruelty inflicted in the world by the USA and other far-from-socialist regimes.
People conflate socialism with communism and various dictatorships, as it steers people and governments towards neoliberal capitalism, which bills itself as a better alternative, without clarifying who it is better for (and who loses). I think readers would be aghast if they knew the “cost” (financial and human) of foisting capitalism on countries:
❌The USA/CIA with the help of the UK has overthrown the governments (many democratically elected) of at least 60 countries, often replacing them with dictatorships. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_involvement_in_regime_change
❌”according to Brazil’s later-established truth commission, killings by the state became routine”
❌[Indonesia] ”In just over a month, at least half a million and possibly as many as 1 million people were killed”
❌”The exact number of people who went through the Southern Cone’s torture machinery is impossible to calculate, but it is probably somewhere between 100,000 and 150,000, tens of thousands of them killed”
❌”The economic plan has had to be enforced, and in the Chilean context that could be done only by the killing of thousands”
❌”the wars in Chechnya have killed an estimated 100,000 civilians”
❌”The years of criminal capitalism have killed off 10 percent of our population.”
❌”By May 2007, more than 900 contractors had been reported killed”
❌The creation of an underclass of between 25 and 60 percent of the population

Thanks.
And a question: is capitalism actually anti-socialism?
And this, despite all its whitewashing of world history, coming from a nation that was initially built on the theft of a whole continent and the genocide of its indigenous people and its wealth created on the backs of the slaves they took from other parts of the world. Words fail me. David Olusoga’s recent and excellent BBC2 series ‘Empire’ is particularly instructive here – he should make a similar US centric equivalent.
Empire is brilliant. We watched the second part last night, and will undoubtedly see it all. This is a BBC success.
Went to a David Olusoga lecture in Cambridge last week, “A Gun Through Time”. Excellent evening, thought provoking.
They appear to be denouncing the “horrors” of social security, old age pensions, and public provision of essential services such as housing, healthcare and education. Because, you know, it would be a violation to take from one class of citizens with excess resources to provide for another class with too few .
At least their constituents can see plainly that they are in favour of the wealthy hoarding resources while everyone else dies in penury: afraid, cold and hungry. So much for the four freedoms.
Agreed
Abraham Lincoln was a socialist.

Oh, the irony.
Quoting Jefferson and Madison justifying the preservation to each individual “the fruits of their personal industry” whilst also condemning every employee to the loss of the profits of their personal industry…
Perhaps it’s not irony. Perhaps the ghost of Hayek still haunts the collective mind of the USA.
Agreed
If it is self evident that socialism is bad and the USA has a perfect system of liberty, then why do they feel the need for such a motion? A spectre haunts them. They feel feel threatened by an ideology that is miniscule and dying out. The only ones talking about socialism and the ones complaining about it.
How long before someone on the right in the UK argues for something similar to be adopted over here?
It will happen.
Starmer will vote for it.
