I mentioned earlier this afternoon that I was going out at dusk to see if there was any roosting activity going on amongst the birds at Blakeney, in north Norfolk.
We were rewarded. Approximately 5,000 (and maybe more) pink-footed geese flew over us. The flock might have been at least a kilometre wide, and as this recording shows, it took more than two minutes to fly overhead. It was quite an extraordinary sight and sound.
The birds were heading for Holkham, where around 40,000 of these geese roost on the marshes each night.
I borrowed this picture of what would have looked like a tiny part of what was flying over this afternoon from Facebook and hope I will be forgiven:

Thank you Richard, what a privilege to see and hear that amazing sight.
My husband and I live in France and the Cranes ( Grue) fly right over our house in the Charente, it feeds the soul to see this incredible migration of different species.
My maximum cranes at once is 14
This was 5,000 geese at least
A staggering sight
