The FT had an article last night that was headlined:
Reeves calls on EU to give greater access for City of London
It then noted:
Rachel Reeves has urged the EU to give greater access for the City of London, telling finance ministers from the bloc it would help grow their stagnating economies.
I suspect there was some muttering about pots and kettles in response to that.
The FT then noted, accurately:
Britain's self-imposed exclusion from the single market after Brexit has limited access for banks and investment firms, while the City no longer follows EU rules.
No more need be said. The UK is in self imposed exile from the EU, not least so it could offer unfair competitive advantage to the City of London.
Reeves really is living in Cloud Cuckoo Land if she thinks that anyone in Brussels is going to have sympathy with her argument. Their obvious response will be the UK cannot have its cake and eat it, and they would be right to say so.
And as for the charms of the City of London? I think Europe, like many others, is learning that they are best avoided.

Jesus…………..they’ll say and put forward anything except that which is really needed.
So, this is what a failed state looks like from the inside?
This country from a public sector employee point of view is country that votes in a political elite who do not like them, and makes it harder for people like me who want to help be of any use at all.
It’s a continuous, self replicating merry go round of misery.
Living in the westminster bubble feted by the MSM and a coterie of billionaire donors they truly cannot see the world as it is.
The Labour leadership is delusional, so far removed from reality and still believing in English exceptionalism.
Hopeless and helpl, ess they will only get worse.
Tell me that story was a mistake. Nobody could be that crass. Surely. Tell me it isn’t true. I could understand it a little more if she had asked someone if they would take it off our hands, before it ruins us in a Financial Crash for the umpteenth time. We never recovered from the last one.
All true, John
God Almighty, just how stupid and deluded is the labour leadership?
You want greater access to EU markets Reeves? So state unambiguously that Brexit is a disaster, the people behind it a pack of liars and right wing fanatics, that it has weakened us and the EU just when we need to stand together in an increasingly dangerous world, and that you will start to move towards rejoining now.
Fat chance. The weak cowardly labour party is still obsessed with it’s ‘hero voters’, who apparently are all still leavers.
Many thanks – totally agreed. A very sharp and incisive comment.
These so-called ‘hero voters’ (I’ve never worked out why they are called ‘hero’?) are focused on in an article from last Sunday’s Observer written by ‘Labour election gurus’ Deborah Mattinson and Claire Ainsley.
I won’t link to it as it made me fume (and more enlightened articles are available), but essentially it states that reviewing the US presidential election, and contrasting it with the British general election ‘much can be learnt from Labour’s win from the Democrat’s experience’. Essentially they suggest more pandering to the ‘hero voters’ – more flags and patriotism were specifically mentioned, and a general shift to the right. In essence, Harris and the Democrats were ‘too woke’.
I despair.
I mentioned it on MOnday I think
It was truly dire
They actually mentioned Starner’s Labour’s great achievement as being rid of Corbyn, albeit without using his name
Not that the present Government has any plans to do so, but surely the question is, “Would the E.U ever allow the U.K to re join”?
Talk about arrogance.
Labour seems incapable of understanding that as far as the EU is concerned the UK is a third country.
The UK if it wants a deal the UK will be required to follow EU rules.
Still waiting for the in depth @BBC ‘public service broadcaster’ investigation.
Why is the FT the only bit of the media which even dares point out the obvious.
Did she actually say ‘the city of London’? This shows absolute lack of understanding of what any trade deal would actually want. The city of London is primarily offices, service industries. After coming on a decade of the UK signalling their discontent, the EU will have built up their own services. They don’t need London.
She could have highlighted the parts of the UK that actually make stuff the EU might conceivably want to buy, like food, technology. Near me there’s a small energy park that makes wind turbines, investment in which would benefit everyone. Given recent discontent, this could have been an excellent opportunity to appease farmers by highlighting what they have to export. Clearly these kinds of business are not a priority for Reeves.
The City is her concern.
Thank you, Richard.
Yesterday evening, I watched the news and was stunned how crass, arrogant and ill informed that visit was. It won’t have escaped the EU’s notice that she prioritises the City. WTF?! That being the case, is she stupid?
This approach goes back a decade when, among others, Bailey supported the concept of Britzerland and wanted the UK / Brexitannia, Switzerland and may be Singapore and UAE to act as the world’s creditors, but have light touch regulation (as the rest of the world needs us). Oh, dear!
Oh dear, indeed
Staggeringly inept is my description
