My son, Thomas, who is now working with me on the videos that we are producing, has been in Wales this week, visiting University friends. He has also been editing a pile of videos that we recorded before he went away. He also appears to be enjoying himself, working on improving his camera skills.
Thomas evidenced quite interesting artistic flair when he did GCSE art. I challenged him to undertake an exercise this week that would require him to think about the interactions of shutter speed, apertures, focus and depth of field control, plus the related use of ISOs, all with an emphasis on mood. I thought he would come back with something interesting, but I was not expecting this collection which he apparently shot during a visit lasting several hours to the new museum at the Vale of Rheidol railway in Aberystwyth.
He borrowed a Sony RX4 camera for this trip, but based on our discussions we now think that this does not really meet our needs and that we should be investing in more video-focused Sony equipment to meet the demand of what we wish to do.
Meanwhile, it looks as if I am going to have my game when it comes to creativity.

Richard, Some of them are out of focus.
No they are not
They focus on what he wanted you to look at
Quite. It’s very good use of, as you say, depth of field control.
Nah, get a Twin Lens Reflex and some HP5.
Then do your own processing
I’ve still got one of these

All we need now is the VofR to go back to Rail Blue
But well done Thomas
Thomas has never seen 35mm, let alone 120 that I first learned to process as a teenager to make contact prints, hiding in the bottom of the airing cupboard.
And BR blue? Yuck. I rather like the current liveries.
Great shots. He filled the brief didn’t he!
Can smell the axle grease. A reminder of how beautiful industrial machinery can be.
He, and I, are hooked on Welsh narrow gauge railways
You’ve probably travelled in carriages built by my brother (now retired) at Boston Lodge
Most likely given the number of times I have been on the Ffestiniog
Annoyingly impressed. Reminds me how utterly rubbish my iPhone snaps are.
Something like this can be done on iPhone. But it’s easier with a proper camera.
