A near-perfect spring weekend.
Thyme in my back garden.
Early morning residues of rain on ivy, also in the back garden:
Then to birding at Kingfisher Bridge both days:
The Cam was behind me when taking this shot. It is usually 2.5 metres or more above the lake level.
Wetland and reedbeds make perfect warbler country at this time of the year:
Sedge, Cetti's, garden, and reed warblers, plus chiffchaff, whitethroat and blackcap, which are also warblers. Admittedly, not all were seen - but all were heard. The sound was astonishing. I almost wish I could have recorded it.
These two were enjoying it:
So were we. And yet so few were - almost no distance from Ely, where we live with maybe 20,000 other people.
Getting out into nature is one of the best ways to improve well-being known. I wish more people partook of it. And there's even a cafe to meet my coffee cravings.
Life does not get much better than this.

Nothing like being amidst nature, and birdwatching. Yesterday morning I was idly looking out of the kitchen window at Mr and Mrs Blackbird ferreting about for worms in the grass, nothing unusual. The suddenly Mrs Blackbird opens her mouth and Mr B pops in a large juicy worm. My attention now held, I suddenly realised Mrs Blackbird was All Wrong ! It was actually a baby cuckoo. Never in years of garden birdwatching in many different places have I ever seen this before.
Wow! I heard cuckoo (s) today but what a treat for you.
I’m so very glad you had such a lovely and happy day! You deserve a break – from what I see here you work very hard at helping us understand monetary stuff. While it’s not exactly my favourite thing, I’m glad you take time to try and explain it.
Here’s hoping you have more fun days out and about and in your garden! Best wishes from sunny Liverpool.
Thanks Maggie
Glad you make time for this. Essential for mental and physical health.
For me it’s sailing…. but even at sea one is still reminded of the mess we are in. Off Mull I had to take great care to avoid Macquarie Rocks. If only others had taken the same care avoiding the Bank named after the same man.
🙂
Evenly dull all day Sunday here on the Costa Del Jurassic so I didn’t set foot outside the door. I’m looking at your lovely images very jealously. And very sadly I can’t walk very far any more – maybe three or four miles, so I wouldn’t risk going more than 2 from the car. Frustrating because I used to find I only needed to walk a couple of miles from the road and I’d be in splendid isolation.10 miles even better. But I count my blessings because I know plenty of people who can’t even walk that far, including a friend who used to get the most amazing butterfly shots.
Sorry to hear that Nigel.
Yesterday it toiok only 500m or so from the cvarpark / cfae for most people to disappear and 1km out thewre was almost no one
It was absurd given how great it was
Richard,
Keep posting lovely pictures!
