There are people who are willing to say the right thing about Gaza.
This is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, speaking in the US House of Representatives:
There is no world in which the forced famine of 1.1 million people cannot be considered genocide. And that is exactly what we are watching unfold in Gaza now.
We must enforce U.S. laws and halt weapons transfers to the Israeli government to stop an atrocity in the making. pic.twitter.com/N40Jk3yKc7

She is right. The time for action is now. The world will not forgive those who wait. Even less will it forgive those who wait whilst supplying the arms that are being used to drive millions into famine.
One day I hope that those who are waiting whilst supplying arms will be brought to account for their actions. Genocide is unforgivable.

The American Right hate her. She is a woman who is outspoken
she is a woman of colour
she is a social democrat (which to republicans is ‘Far-Left’)
she speaks from principles
and worst of all, intelligent.
That really annoys them!
The same applies here. So many voters who’ll believe any lie or fantasy thrown at them by unscrupulous politicians. Starmer Party supporters are typical!
I coined the name Starmerrhoids for Sir Keir “Zionist without qualification” Starmer’s cult-followers, on the grounds that they were a pain in the bum and potentially dangerous to health.
I don’t take ownership of the term, as I’m sure others came up with it for the same reason, but that doesn’t change the thinking behind the term – that of a description of the equivalent of a lumpen proletariat of cult-followers (with Starmerites, by contrast, being the “true believer” inner circle) willing to forgive any and every nonsense from one of the most vacuous and
dishonest of politicians
As regards the vacuity, consider the moronicism of that latest nonsense about “maxed out on the credit cards”!!!
As regards the dishonesty, consider how he lied his way into the Leadership of “his” LabourParty, (VERY much his – certainly no longer a Labour Party I recognise) pretending to be Corbyn’s friend, then proclaiming he never said that, despite the available receipts in the form of video recordings.
Frankly, I think he’ll be worse than Sunak, Truss and Johnson, beating the first in smallness of moral stature, the second in stupid extremism and the third in mendacity.
We really HAVE to hope for a wave of George Galloways that result in a hung Parliament that prevents Starmer from becoming PM.
What an inspiring woman! Listening to her makes me feel absolutely ashamed of our government and in particular the Labour Party – with their tepid response to the events in Israel. A Labour politician who expressed the same views as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would be pushed out and someone like Gerald Kauffman would never be selected in 2024.
Agreed
Yes, but we are all implicated by our govt and opposition not demanding a ceasefire , continuing arms supplies and maybe uses of UK Cyprus airbases etc .
Unless we resist we are colluding in this.
I wonder if political hesitancy and fence-sitting, over the terrible events in Gaza, is a consequence of globalisation. I am thinking of companies like Israel owned Elbit Systems who have a joint venture with the UK to produce arms and training and who have plans to expand their operations. In a world with so many potential conflicts looming and, for example, with Russia’s focus on increasing arms production, is it these kind factors that stop the UK and the US imposing strict sanctions on Israel and unanimously condemning their treatment of Palestinians?
A very good point
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is also sympathetic to Modern Money Theory.
“Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says the theory that deficit spending is good for the economy should ‘absolutely’ be part of the conversation” (2019)
https://www.businessinsider.com/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-ommt-modern-monetary-theory-how-pay-for-policies-2019-1
and her wikipedia entry notes this saying MMT is “an economic theory with little support among mainstream academics”.
I expect those academics don’t want to be out of favour with the establishment.
No Andrew, we are not all ‘implicated’.in the craven, criminal behaviour of our governments. Many many thousands of us, across the world, are going out, forsaking the safety of home, into the public spaces that remain still ours to occupy, to make protest visible , and physical, That is a resistance.
The alternative to silence is dissent.
I was reminded of a visit to a Jewish cafe in Golders Green, London in the 1960s with a Jewish friend. It was joyously cacophonous, as everyone disagreed with everyone else about everything. These were the children of survivors of the Holocaust.
Such voices are on longer heard in Israel as Nazism rejoices over this Final Solution, of a Jewish homeland founded on the eradication of Palestine from the map of history.
Elsewhere, more than a flicker of that culture of dissent remains:
