These three headlines paper next to each other in an FT newsletter this morning:
How did we reach such depths?
What is seemingly certain is that Sunak is now seeking to win the title as worst Tory leader of this century, now beating Truss by some way.

The trouble with Rishi is that he still thinks he works at Goldman Sachs where it seems that there are no rules and little accountability when it comes to ‘market making’.
He purposefully in my view disregarded the medical evidence and feedback in order to pursue a notion that he was doing the hospitality sector a favour.
Investment bankers make poor state employees. Period. Let’s excise them from our politics i say.
Sunak shows all the indicators of his privileged education, extreme wealth and a work life in the City. Utterly detached from the realities of most people, ignorant of what faces real businesses and SME’s, and emotionally thick. In his tetchiness he shows how he has led a charmed life and cannot understand why he should ever be challenged. A different version and more polished version of Johnson.
And lying through his teeth about his WhatsApps.
Agree to all that
I am shocked beyond measure by the new depths to which the UK PM has sunk with his Rwanda bill and even more – if that is possible – by the even more extreme reaction of the far right of his party.
This bill needs to be stopped in its tracks now – but how? Does it have to be left to the Lords (or even the monarch?!) to do the only honourable thing?
Just posted in Guardian Politics Live Blog:
“Rwanda bill ‘inconsistent’ with ECHR, says parliament’s joint committee on human rights”:
“Parliament’s joint committee on human rights, which is cross-party and chaired by Labour’s Harriet Harman, has published its own briefing on the human rights concerns raised by the Rwanda bill. ….”
“The briefing argues that the bill is “inconsistent” with the European convention on human rights. It says:
The bill would require all domestic courts to accept that Rwanda is safe and not to consider any review or appeal brought on the grounds that it is not – even if there is compelling evidence in support. This raises difficult constitutional questions about the separation of powers and the rule of law. It would prevent the courts considering arguable claims that removal to Rwanda is unsafe, which would expose individuals to a risk of their fundamental rights not to be subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment being violated, and is inconsistent with the right to an effective remedy guaranteed under article 13 ECHR [European convention on human rights]. …..”

“Sunak is now seeking to win the title as worst Tory leader of this century”.
In fairness, pretty stiff competition from: Camoron, Johnson, 40 day Truss.
All a reflection of the mental depths to which Tory party members (circa 90k select the leader) have sunk.
The Prime Minister of a country which is aiding and abetting genocide in Gaza is unlikely to be concerned with the human rights of asylum seekers in UK. The whole charade is designed as a distraction from what is really going on in the world. How many people has Rwanda promised to accept, if this vile scheme goes ahead? The initial number agreed to was a maximum of 200. Set this against the 161,000 backlog of asylum cases and it is obviously just a (expensive) stunt.
What’s truly sickening is that there are a significant number of Tory MPs who believe this deeply racist bill is not racist enough. These are elected officials – people had to actually put a mark next to their name in an election to allow them to go to the HOC as their representatives. I shudder to think what that says about the UK.
I’d agree that Sunak is worse than Johnson, Truss, Cameron and Blair, but he’s got lower levels to reach before he’s worse than the Wicked Witch of the West aka Thatcher. It was Thatcher and Reagan who introduced us all to neo-liberalism, and the UK, along with other western nations, has been sliding towards fascism ever since. Thatcher’s acolytes are continuing to drag the UK downhill, but she started the ball rolling. She was, beyond doubt, in my view, the worst PM that we’ve ever had to endure. And yes, I did sing (to myself) when she died, “Ding dong, the witch is dead ….”
There are some people whose legacy is hard to mourn
