Very poignant, I love everything CWS does; it cuts through the hypocrisy like nothing else. Well, to be fair, so does R4’s The Skewer; well worth a listen if you’re not familiar with it.
In the old days the serfs walked while the overlords rode. In this photograph (ignoring the caption) we see the planned future reflected in the past; the serfs will once more walk while the overlords alone will ride. Bringing this about is for many the rationale behind pushing for climate change. Ordinary folk will have their bicycles (perhaps) or very limited public transport at best believing it to be necessary for saving the planet while the wealthy will ride their electric resource-hogging vehicles to their small-minded hearts’ content.
They already do, mate. WWF figures show the 1% burn up a good proportion of fossil resources. The fight is already lost, money gives power and trumps all allocative reason. It’s a continuation of privilige – the divine right of kings to kill whoever they like or the right of the lord to screw whomever. Climate is not an excuse for that. Rather an attempt to break the power of money.
Dan Neidle wrote an interesting piece on twitter about why it was such an unpopular tax even though few people are impacted by it. He had conducted some market research with quite surprising results.
The rest of what he wrote today – inclusing his demand that inheritance tax be slashed – showed his total bias to the wealthy
I’m always totally bemused by the unpopularity of inheritance tax.
Surely in the cartoon the petitioner should be in a casket carried by a hearse.
