I posted this on Twitter not long ago:
So, why are politicians so obsessed with closing down their own, highly successful, safe baking operation?

“baking operation”. I think they are not making cakes! 🙂
Too late…
Richard,
Leave it as it is! It gave me a chuckle as we all know neither the UK government or the USA government could successfully run a first class bakery. LOL!
Correction needed “banking” not “baking”
Too late
But there is homemade foccacia for lunch
(Not my work: I am spoilt by living with a baker)
they do “cook the books ” though
It would be nice if politicians did have a highly successful baking operation. It would at least show that they were capable of doing something useful.
I used to work in a primary school in central Leicester teaching community classes to parents. I was explaining one day that the children wouldn’t be in the following Monday because it was a Baker Day (inset training for teachers introduced by Kenneth Baker, education secretary)….I had a suden thought that they may not know what went on during these days, as for them it was mainly an inconvenience, so I asked them if they knew what those days were for……they genuinely thought that we came in to do baking…..I just loved that picture it conjured up of us all having a big baking session…I wonder how many other people thought that?! I think they were relieved to know that we focused on rather more serious educational matters.
🙂
Richard- an amusing typo “So, why are politicians so obsessed with closing down their own, highly successful, safe baking operation”, rather than “banking”
Maybe government minced pies, in the run-up to Christmas?
Oops….
Upside-Down cake a banker’s delight!
Andrew Dickie,
Would you really eat a mince pie (or any pie for that matter) prepared by the UK or USA government?
I would not but it is your stomach so munch away!
Because their private funders are asking politicians to get Government out of the way so that the private sector can expand its extractive operations into former public provision and increase profits and monopolise it.
Pretending there is no government money opens up opportunities and funnels people to the private sector as well.
Safe Baking Operation?
Takes the biscuit……..
Why?
This is the safest banking operation in the UK
Maybe the only safe banking operation in the UK
Why do you think otherwise?
Politicians get worked up because they think they have to balance the budget, when they should be balancing the economy. Currently the economy is out of balance and there is insufficient money for it to work efficiently.
We need more dough
Agreed 🙂
Ho-ho….you’re on a roll
Is that a jelly roll or a French pastry roll with extra butter?
Because they’re following half-baked economic theories

Ok……
Richard, this is of topic, but I’ve just watched this piece about climate change and thought you would be very interested if you’ve not already seen it.
I think the approach being discussed is very relevant to your Climate Green Deal.
I also think many of your readers would be interested in seeing it too.

Worth watching
I’m not sure why the simplistic idea of “balancing the books” has such a wide appeal. I suppose it relies upon the false analogy to the household which is nonetheless easy for everyone to understand from their own personal experience.
But if inflation is positive (even 2%) so costs rise every year and usually wage costs faster than that, and the population is increasing so level demand for the same services per capita means increasing costs, and also the population is ageing so the demand for many services particularly healthcare is increasing each year, then the amount the government spends will have to increase every year. We should expect the amount of tax raised and the national debt to increase every year.
The alternative is a constant state of cuts, shrinking public provision, impoverisation, and emiseration. Who wants that?
Agreed
I am preapring some data on this…
The ideology of disaster capitalism which barrow boys like our present Prime Minister, Sunak, who made his personal fortune thieving others fortunes through a deregulated City believes is a gospel of truth, combined with a misunderstanding of how America actually works socio economically gleaned from his short shallow intellectually spoiled Stanford college years, has created a Frankenstein monster who is more Elizabethan I colonising privateer than engaged citizen.
And there are now, unfortunately for the world, an entire generation of such monsters in positions of political and economic power globally. All living examples of human devolution.
