And it was a good morning for raptors. At one point, there were two buzzards and three red kites in the air together. This was one of the buzzards against a moody sky, pushing my camera to its limits:

Yesterday and today there have been 4 or 5 red admirals soaking up the sun on my next door neighbours south-facing kitchen window cill.
Lovely.
I saw none today.
It was coolish this morning.

You need a longer lens.
I wondered….
And longer lenses need to be dragged around. Is it worth it?
I can see *two* hoverflies!
I wouldn’t worry about a longer lens unless you’re really into photography. Having a half decent phone camera is so much handier
I now known to look for hoverflies. Not my area, as you now know.
I was into photography when much younger. These days I use a phone in the main, because I always have one available.
These days longer lenses – even zooms – don’t weigh anything like the old manual focus lenses we grew up with but it’s down to personal taste.
Yes – I think that there maybe two hoverflies after all.
But they still cost a lot…..
I would hazard one hoverfly and one weevil.
On reviewing the image, make that two hoverflies and one weevil.

If you have any deer around your way, we’re arriving at rutting season. Down here at Cannock Chase and surrounding area, they get everywhere, even Tesco car park, and local photographers have a great time – cyclists can get chased by angry stags on local trails too.

In fact today has been very quiet
Thank you to Richard, et al. As to the photography aspect it may depend upon on what you want to see well and what you want to show. I have jettisoned the long, heavy lense in favour of a ‘Macro’ lense. It is useful hand-held and simulates a standard lense in angle until one goes in very, very close where detail becomes very clear. Also these are not too unrealistically expensive.
But I agree that as phones develop their cameras become better and better.
Macro is great for some things
But not buzzards…..
Third time lucky?
So far I notice two hoverflies and one weevil.
Assuming this goes through this late.
Autumn is definitely very beautiful at times Richard, no doubt about it; falling leaves and fungi emerging (I picked and ate a few edible (being careful) ones last year, looking forward to doing the same this year.
Defintely two hoverflies and a beetle of some sort there. Here in Hertfordshire we’re lucky enough to have loads of red kites in the skies now. They are almost like vultures in that while I see one ot two every day, sometimes one of them spots some particularly juicy morsal, and from nowhere 5, 10 or more others will appear, and circle like vultures. And they are great fliers, sometimes seeming to have aerial dogfights with each other, or swooping to the ground in an instant. Impressive for such large birds.
And magnificent to look at. And hear.
I don’t like the vulture quality
I much prefer a buzzard, or harrier
I am lucky to get the choice most weekends
Do you all know the Northumberland Gap tree, the sycamore on Hadrian’s Wall that was in Robin Hood?
Some sick idiot has cut it down overnight. There’s a police investigation into it. Won’t bring it back, though.
I actually walked along that section of the wall earlier this year. I am shocked and sickened.
