Facebook has launched, via Instagram, a new Twitter rival overnight. Called Threads I am now on it urging my usual RichardJMurphy name, as on Twitter and YouTube:
Of course, being on it is one thing, posting to it is something else. Twitter is still working despite all its faults. Yesterday's thread has had 570,000 impressions so far. It will be a long time before a rival can deliver that, unless, of course, Musk really messes up.

I can’t seem to get it on Windows 🙁
I think you need to have an Instagram account. I have a moribund one which allowed me in.
This from the Instagram website:
Threads is a new app, built by the Instagram team, for sharing text updates and joining public conversations.
You log in using your Instagram account and posts can be up to 500 characters long and include links, photos, and videos up to 5 minutes in length.
We’re working on Threads soon being compatible with the open, interoperable social networks that we believe can shape the future of the internet.

It’s easy to get started with Threads: simply use your Instagram account to log in. Your Instagram username and verification will carry over, with the option to customize your profile specifically for Threads.
I thank you for your efforts Helen but remain dismally assured it only works on the two main Smartphone platforms, and also not at all in the EU oddly enough. I expect a Windows interface will be along at some point though.
We’ll have to wait and see what the posting numbers are, but I suspect that Threads, given a few months, will give Twitter a run for its money.
I’ll be taking a look at how many tweets are generated per day and see what the drop is, if any. That’ll be a decent indicator of Twitter’s future.
Threads is and will be surveillance capitalism, everything Zuckerberg touches is intent on extracting data and value, no matter the cost to society and democracy.
Sure, have a presence on Threads but please, promote and contribute to Mastodon or any other service on the Fediverse if you care about freedom and democracy
Hi Richard, in case you haven’t found out by now.
Threads contravenes numerous Privacy concerns within the EU so will not be available until they update their software to meet EU standards. The UK has lower standards which is why you have it there. I live in France so not available without a VPN.
Incidentally they will allow eventually sharing etc with Mastodon. They use the same system. Please continue your posts in Mastodon!
