The holidays are coming. This afternoon I bunked off to watch birds at WWT Welney, which is just over the border into Norfolk. This was a few minutes before sunset after the marsh harriers had gone but whilst the short-eared owls were definitely still around:

I have been tempted to comment & ask questions on a number of issues on the blog recently but glad I didn’t! The worry of yet more questions for you, knowing you have long covid caused restraint. This post was an answer to the unposted comments – they can wait for the New Year! Enjoy Christmas and the countryside Richard.
Thanks
Beautiful picture Richard. Thank you for all your blogs this year.
Wishing you and yours a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year
Thanks
Lovely afternoon
One of my most memorable experiences was taking my daughter to the floodlit swan feed at Welney….it was how I imagine it might be to see a host of angels,
with all those white feathered wings gliding in over the light. Truly spectacular.
It’s good, but I was much further north on the reserve this afternoon and there was hardly a swan in sight
And nothing out of the unusual, but the incredible sound of the wetlands wildlife as night approaches
Beautiful.
May I wish you a peaceful and relaxed break and a very happy new year.
Thanks
And to you
I used to go to Woodwalton a lot when studying environmental science at college in Peterborough. We knew the man who ran it, and he used to take my sons birdwatching on the fens.
Hope you enjoy your Christmas break, Richard.
Thanks
I can’t begin to tell you how much I’ve gained from reading your threads on Twitter and posts here. I’m a reader/digester rather than a commentator, but I wanted to wish you all the best over the festive season and I just hope some day we can create a better, brighter and more equal world. (I don’t think I’ll see it my lifetime, but you never know!). Thanks for everything you do.
Many thanks
Appreciated
A stunning picture Richard. As I’ve grown older, I find the benefits of just being in the countryside absolutely essential. It’s certainly a balm to the worry and anger our awful politics sometimes produces in me.
Have a happy Christmas, and lets hope, that 2023 can be a better year for sanity and decency in our politics than 2022.
