This happened last night:
It has taken longer than usual this year for this additional 10,000 followers to be added. 210,000 was reached on 27 October. Elon Musk contributed, and for some time in November numbers following fell regularly, albeit in relatively small numbers (maybe 2,000 overall). I also had long Covid.
Now the question is, do I pay for a blue tick? I am genuinely unsure what to do about that.

Richard, my advice, for what it may be worth, would be to NOT give Musk any money. I don’t think you need a blue tick. And you are on Mastodon, too. What would a blue tick give you that you don’t already have?
His plan is to downgrade non ticked accounts
Unfortunately I believe Musk will game this. Thus a Blue tick seems sensible to prevent shadowing.
That is my fear…
A bit of social science. Trial it for 3 months. Assess the results. Make a decision.
A question being much discussed by journalists, whose Twitter content, like that of experts, has done much for the growth and credibility of the platform. The blue tick has signalled credibility – not available to copy cats. This may now change. Thanks for the link
I suspect I will pay for it, very reluctantly
