Yvette Cooper – a Prime Minister in waiting if ever there was. Old school analytical approach with critical thinking, thank God someone does their own preparation and owns their brief.
I listened to PMQs. Truss looked like a a typical anxious undergraduate that I’d pencil for needing extra help, peering through an A4 folder for answers amongst a mass of differential notes; Yvette Cooper on the other hand was the Prof.
Yvette, please appoint Caroline Lucas as your coalition Environment Secretary – come on be brave!
Oh dear, oh dear ….. as I believe somebody else said. To watch Braverman going from gracious, complacent, self-loving smiling to grabbing her papers prior to…… ? leaving? running for cover?…. was a sight for sore eyes.
Arf, Arf and thrice Arf 🙂
I like Yvette Cooper, but before I let her anywhere near Government she’d have to show me that she understand MMT , understood the true nature of the Government’s relationship with the Bank of England and that she believed in a strong public services.
She did not in 2015
She was a million miles from doing so
None of them do.
Furthermore, they’ve built their careers by arguing for more taxes or less taxes (depending on how they lean) and MMT challenges all of that. Turkeys wouldn’t vote for Christmas etc
Is there any possibility of getting her to do so? Or would Ed get in the way?
If you quizzed Cooper on MMT, GQE etc., she’d look exactly Braverman does in the clip above.
I wonder how currency and financial markets would react to a policy of zero interest rates and printing money to pay for everything?
You obviously have an opinion.
Why not share it, with reasons?
Stan
Stick to football mate.
It’s a simple game right up your street.
You are out of your depth here.
I am willing to take everything that a labour politician said between 2010 and 2015 with a pinch of salt regarding austerity and public finances. I understand it was all part of a trust charade. What I find more important is what Yvette Cooper did when she was a treasury minister during the great financial crisis. It seems that she didnt make any howlers, unlike her successor, Liam Byrne who joked; “sorry all the money is gone.”
Yvette Cooper was in the room when the banks came calling. I think she knows more than she is willing to say at this moment.
Here is the final piece of evidence, from a news article from 2015:
Asked if it was wrong for the party to have run up a deficit before the financial crash, Yvette Cooper admitted: “I’m saying that ideally you would have had it in surplus, so yes, we should have had it in surplus by that time.
“However, what was the consequence of that? The Tories want to say that either it caused the financial crisis which it clearly didn’t, or they want to say that it made it harder to deal with the financial crisis which it also didn’t.”
Whether or not there was a deficit or surplus was irrelevant. I am sure that if labour managed a surplus the conservatives would be moaning that high taxation caused the crisis.
I recall what she said about MMT when Corbyn was running for leader…..
At the end, you can see how very few Conservative MPs are daring to show their faces, as the Truss regime starts to disintegrate under the weight of its own rotten wickedness,
On the matter of reticent Tory MP’s, has anyone else noticed how few of them now mention the fact that they are Tories on their Facebook homepage’s?
What?
She’s sacked Kwarteng and Jeremy Hunt will be Chancellor!!
I told you Hunt would be back!
Oh dear, oh dear.
Honestly – this is SO embarrassing. And I’m English, I’ve nowhere else to go or pretend to be!!
It is GE time. There’s got to be a no confidence vote now – this has gone on too long.
Unbelievable.
I agree with you, PSR, but I am not putting any money on a GE. So not a sure thing, as it were.
There is something really bad going on here. It looks bad but it also smells bad.
They are still there. If there was any other party in, they’d have been forced out or had the honour to resign.
Why are they still there? They’re busted.
And they are still talking about ‘tough decisions’ having to be made. They still want to use their quack doctor economics to bleed us dry when we’ve been over-bled already to calm the markets who’s manifestly lying logic is now dominating.
Who rules? The Tories don’t. They’re finished. Why are they still there? The stench of something rotten is now overpowering.
It is in the interest of most politicians not to understand MMT. Then they can talk about ‘taxpayers money’ and how we cannot afford things because there is no ‘magic money tree’. I note there was the paper tiger above ‘a policy of zero interest rates and printing money to pay for everything’, which I have certainly never heard you recommend. Thereby politicians evade responsibility for using the power they have to direct resources for the benefit of the whole country and its people.
All central banks understand MMT inside out and therefore so will senior politicians. To believe otherwise is naive. The fact that interest rates are not at zero and the printing presses are quiet just tells you that the Fed and the BofE want to slow the economy, yes increase unemployment to try and eradicate inflation. It is a choice bourn on belief not ignorance.
how much more evidence do you need, as i discovered 60 years ago ,that economics is not a science in any sense of the word
