There is not a lot to add to that.

There is hope yet – albeit slim.
Alcoholics cannot be cured until they recognise they have a problem.
Until a larger proportion of the country accept that bigotry is no solution for economic and social improvement, the nasty party will continue to ride high in the polls.
On the subject of recognising problems it’s high time it was accepted Boris Johnson has problems and is in acute need of diagnosis and treatment. His inability to function in office grows more obvious every day.
Johnson’s capering during Sunak’s solemn lament for Ukraine preceding the budget speech was staggering. The faces and the giggling suggested something quite disturbing.
Exactly – the bloke simply isn’t right.
Not only a Conservative MP for 40 years, but a Conservative life peer for the last 12.
Lest we forget, 17.4 million people voted to “leave” in 2016 (six years ago now). A slim majority of those voting, but only 37% of the 46.5 million registered votes, and not even a quarter of the 66+ million population.
And then the Conservatives won an 80 seat landslide in 2019, with less than 44% of the votes, and a percentage point more than the votes that delivered a hung parliament in 2017. Like Trump, Johnson seems to be stuck in permanent campaign mode, perhaps because neither really know how to govern. But they are doing their best to tip the tables permanently in their favour. (At risk of Godwin’s law, Hitler won a little over 43% of the vote in March 1933, so there is one demonstration of how a minority of the vote, even a minority of the seats, can be quickly turned into hegemony.)
Anna Soubry, Heidi Allen and others were the final few remaining “conservatives” (not necessarily that moderate) who were flushed out with the Brexit wrecking ball .. lest he be forgotten Jo Johnson.. and Kenneth Clarke. Who isn’t rabid now?? (Please, how they vote, not presentation..)
When you look at the political landscape in the remaining detritus from the executive-neck downwards, but esp. the authoritarian bills being swept through, laws casually broken, hostility toward minorities, attacks on judiciary and civil service… hard to arrive any other conclusion than the Tories have lurched to the far right. The hallmarks are familiar. A quick review of 1930s-40s German history is a wake up call to how a nation was promised everything, and deceived into radicalism…
You could add the likes of David Gauke, Phil Hammond, Dominic Grieve, Oliver Letwin, Amber Rudd, Rory Stewart – many of whom could walk into the current Cabinet without lifting a finger, if political loyalty and dogmatism were not the only tests.
Rory Stewart is sort of a case in point. He ‘presents’ like a more conscientious individual, but how does he vote?
For Academy schools
Against funding 16-19 in education and training
Against smoking bans
Against secure tenancies
Against paying higher benefits to disabled people with needs
Against spending to guarantee jobs for young people..
.. and the list of regressive votes goes on and on
He’s not so moderate after all.
Now scrutinise the voting patterns of the others you’ve listed..
“Who can prevent the once great One Nation Conservative Party from becoming the English National Party?”
You can’t.
Next!
🙂
Good one, John.

this is a letter from Air Commodore Alex Scott [ retired ] no less , and is a damning insight into what type of people we now have in stewardship of this piece of Land . it is worth reminding us the meaning of that word Stewardship ……. ” 1 : the office, duties, and obligations of a steward. 2 : the conducting, supervising, or managing of something especially : the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care stewardship of natural resources ” .
Sadly , the complete opposite is true and the people we keep placing into our Stewardship are corrupted with this Endemic disease of Greed , Rape and Pillage . Unfortunately , we are all inadvertently complicit with this as we buy into their Short Term Gain , Mad Consumerism and Blind Faith .
Was there a time when the Conservatives were not an English nationalist party? is anyone confident that Labour is not the same? Labour tacitly (sometimes not so tacitly) have supported the Scottish Tories at the last two General Elections. their reward being a free run for Labour’s one-and-only MP…..in Morningside of all places.
