I wrote this on this blog on 15 December 2010, under the above title:
Welcome to the Police State:
“Scotland Yard will consider asking the Home Secretary to ban further student marches should the levels of violence which have marred the recent protests continue, Britain's most senior police officer said yesterday.”
Labour were bad on civil liberties. And in the wrong hands their legislation is being abused.
Goodbye to freedom of association and the right to protest then.
Except the truth is people will protest if they want to, whether the police like it or not — and nothing will stop them. Police states always fail in the end. But do we really have to test this hypothesis in the UK?
Last night we saw the evidence that the attempt to create a police state here is still in progress.
We still have to make sure that it fails.

But also if I may, we know that the Labour Party are nothing but a shadow version of the Tories.
Stick a fork in their arse: they’re done.
Over 100 years ago some women got the vote .Now women are penalised for seeking protection from unwanted violence. Last two days behaviours by Police and politicians shows how out of touch they are. Surely a disgrace and where are the police when one actually needs them?
It will fail – this is an attempt at control, the only outcome will be growing resentment – same thing happened in West Germany in the 1950s when the old nazis were given a free pass (& pensions & jobs in the West German admin) fast forward to 1968 and along came the Baader Meinhof and the RAF. Toryscum are setting themselves up for something very very bad – probably worse than the Baaders and RAF.
I think that this Government and the “establishment” fear more active and violent protests in the future as we witness the breakdown and failure of traditional politics to meet the needs of the diverse and divided nation we have become. The great divide is demonstrated by Brexit and the Covid pandemic. We are in for a bumpy ride. ..
The Martin Niemoller quote springs to mind – first they came for…
Im very wary of throwing around terms like fascist and communist as invariably those using them seem to have little idea of what they really mean. Just lazy insults. And yes, Ive been chased by proper fascist police (Portugal 1970, Salazar) and seen the after effects of communism first hand. Both equally grim
However – Eco’s definition of fascism is a pretty good reference and this lot are steadily ticking all the boxes. Meanwhile the bulk of the population and the media are like the proverbial boiled frogs
It is looking like at least 12 out of 14 are now ticked…
