Holding out for what matters

Posted on

I hoped to wake up this morning to the news that Biden was heading for the White House. And, of course, he may be. That is still possible.

But what is certain is that Trump has done better than expected. And as I write more than 60 million Americans have recorded a vote for a populist, sexist, racist, global warning denying, delusional, potentially violent candidate with strong fascist tendencies.

And that scares me.

I am trying to think of a reason why it shouldn't.

But most of all it scares me for three reasons.

The first is that it will be hard enough to save the planet with the USA on side, and much harder without it.

Second, it will be hard enough to save democracy with the USA on side, and much harder without it.

Third, it will be hard enough to hold out against fascism with the US on side, and much harder without it.

And right now I am not feeling optimistic.
