I hoped to wake up this morning to the news that Biden was heading for the White House. And, of course, he may be. That is still possible.
But what is certain is that Trump has done better than expected. And as I write more than 60 million Americans have recorded a vote for a populist, sexist, racist, global warning denying, delusional, potentially violent candidate with strong fascist tendencies.
And that scares me.
I am trying to think of a reason why it shouldn't.
But most of all it scares me for three reasons.
The first is that it will be hard enough to save the planet with the USA on side, and much harder without it.
Second, it will be hard enough to save democracy with the USA on side, and much harder without it.
Third, it will be hard enough to hold out against fascism with the US on side, and much harder without it.
And right now I am not feeling optimistic.

All the democrats had to put up was a moderate candidate who could occupy the centre ground.. and who could “speak“. They didn’t and Joe Biden has been awful. It is a shocking result I agree.. but Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden etc awful candidates. Surely it’s easy to find a statesman Obama type? Even poor version would have won hands down.
Scariest bit is, regardless of the result, Trump would have romped home had it not been for Covid 29!
Possibly…
19 not 29, or have I had a preminission??? 🙂
Yep, it’s looking very close so far. If it’s really close, might it mean civil war in the US, possibly. If Biden wins by a thread, the fascists will not accept it, if Trump wins, the planet is on a very shoogly peg, even more than it is already. Trump has just sold armed drones to Tiawan, China are not happy.
Looks like it could be a couple of days before we know the worlds fate.
Fingers crossed for sanity winning, that’s all we can hope for.
It would be interesting to explore why so many Americans of so many different sexes, colours and outlooks voted Republican this time and the result is a close one. However it’s great to wake up and read that important people are sharing their feelings on this.
I think I posted on here some time ago that Biden needed to push the jobs agenda – squarely facing up to the challenges in the US re climate change, poor infrastructure, inadequate and sometimes polluted water supplies.
I told my wife this morning that I was right…(eye roll).
Biden failed to connect with working class male – Trump has them for similar reasons that Johnson got the ‘red wall’.
I agree with you
All I see in America is a huge segment of brutalised people who are easy prey for the likes of Trump, Roger Stone and the other fascists.
As the USA continues to consume its middle class, the ranks of the brutalised will swell.
And, lacking anything new from the Biden’s and Obama’s of this world and the lily-livered Democrats, they will walk straight into the arms of the likes of Trump who essentially represent the capitalist extremes that enabled the brutalisation to happen in the first place. Except that the concept of Government gets the blame.
I’m afraid that until the Democrats become more progressive, more heterodox, there is no way of getting off this American merry-go-round nightmare.
And the same is happening in the UK too.
Elections come and go.
Anyone who thinks that politicians, at least in the US of A, are anything other than figureheads of whoever is propping them up, is,ever-so-slightly; delusional.
I suggest a read of Eisenhowers’ warning of the problems posed by a large military/industrial complex, and then consider that its size has increased vastly, and has spread *into* the civilian sphere with the arming, on a military-scale, of the nations police services, with military weapons.
We can then move to the naval forces of the USA, which has nearly the same amount of nuclear-armed, and nuclear-fuelled, aircraft carriers, as the rest of the world combined. Although, from my viewpoint, they make excellent targets, their use as projections of influence is limited!
Whoever is head of state, by name, or organisation, makes little difference.
Things are not going to end well. The potential for China/USA conflict is getting greater by the day.
Sigh..
264 V 214. Biden V Trump, electoral college votes. First to 270 gets to be the clown for 4 years.
Are we sure that much of the apparent success of Trump in holding some states and senate seats isn’t down to electoral fraud? After all this is something that his party have been doing for decades. Voter suppression, gerrymandering, vote rigging. This should be looked into.
The very face that Trump is trying to claim fraud against himself plus the above is a pointer to his good ‘results’ being dubious at best. Like all tyrants and crooks, he accuses his opponents of the things he himself is most guilty of. Nobody should accept close wins by the Republicans in any election as legitimate unless proven so by firm evidence.
