Now try reconciling this with what Hartnett says in his witness statement to the hearing:
I cannot see how these can be reconciled. The claim is just not credible. Of course reputation - Hartnett's reputation - played a part in the decision taken. He says so in his email.

… and that makes the deal cheating the public revenue under the common law and fraud by abuse of office under the Frauds Act. Both offence only require loss to the Exchequer but not a personal gain to Hartnett (although saving his reputation is arguably a personal gain). And by telling porkies in his witness statement, he would have committed perjury to add to his other lie to Parliament – “I do not deal with Goldman’s tax affairs”! If this isn’t dealing with Goldman’s tax affairs, I don’t know what is!
PS: I am the latest convert to the Tax Justice cause! Reading this bombshell of an email was my road to Damascus moment!
