I noted this in the British Medical Journal last week, written by Dr Des Spence when discussing the way in which medicine is sold to undergraduates:
University prospectuses should be more honest. Rather than seeing images of relaxed and smiling doctors in white coats gathered around a microscope we should see hungover, frazzled doctors and nurses huddled at the fire exit smoking. The caption might read "A career that pushes you to the edge and then flings you over it."
I couldn't help but think there are some accountants who might share that opinion.

I think that to many professiones are pushing there employees far to hard, which tends to lead to the excessive use of alcohol and drugs, legal or otherwise.
This may just be a reflection of the society we live in, where failure seems not to be acceptable. 🙁
Just coffee in my case Chris, which I abuse badly (and with a conscience about how little those who grow it get for the support I derive from it). But I agree with you. We believe money it what it’s all about. It isn’t.

This rings so true. On the plus side, I get to read this at home today as im signed off by the doc.
I have found my big 4 exeprisnce enormously isolating and stressful and wish I had never left HMRC for a taste of this ‘opportunity’. I have heard similar tales from other assistants in other offices and b4 firms. If you are in HMRC and the grass seems greener, be really careful because these firms are masters of appearing like a good proposition when trying to recruit you.
Got to go, time for another Diazepam.
