Did you miss this, Richard? http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/theresa-may-internet-conservatives-government-a7744176.html I thought this had to be a gag at first but it appears they really believe they can do this. I’m incredulous. “While much of the internet is currently controlled by private businesses like Google and Facebook, Theresa May intends to allow government to decide what is and isn’t published, the manifesto suggests.” How out of touch with reality can May(hem) possibly be?
Seriously worrying
On many levels too, not only that they’d want to do this (I imagine your future blogging career would be brief) but that they think they can too. I was reading earlier of how Iain Duncan Smith has acted as mentor to May(Hem). He’s another one who seems to believe technology can be wished into existence at whim. Perhaps that’s where a lot of this comes from; he’s known to be hyper-sensitive to criticism and, let’s face it, the Tories are getting lots even from those usually considered to be their own side at the moment. Like this (which we might have seen before, not sure) https://www.bowgroup.org/news/bow-group-press-release-elderly-care-biggest-stealth-tax-history
So here we go again another ‘ war on ……’ and we all know how the previous ones worked out – badly. Who will she appoint as the internet czar ? Personally I don’t think this is about regulating porn , but an attempt to control the news, or more likely what they consider to be ‘ fake news ‘. Politicians of Mrs. May’s generation don’t think much beyond a stereotype of the use of the internet ; that it’s bad for the most part . Mainly I imagine because their personal use of it is very limited . But over and above that it terrifies them because they can’t control the narrative any more . Everyone who uses the internet – be it for research, social interaction, ecommerce , or whatever does so in an independent, unregulated way and the failure of the Remain campaign demonstrates this in my view clearly enough because the Remain camp’s narrative – essentially that we would all be worse of economically – failed when pitted against heterogenous opinions of the EU as a failed state. And why is this ? Well how about this : because they know that the present construct of our winner-takes-all society cannot possibly offer a better tomorrow , the essential bribe of the post 1945 politician at election time until Tony Blair declared Britain to be a one-party state .

Thanks, Richard Morris.
I have to say there is dubious logic in there e.g. on R&D

That looks just about right. A more honest relfection of May’s manifesto as she tries to create more division, and drive a wedge between the young and old.
It’s quite extraordinary that a woman who has based her whole campaign on her name brand, squeezing out even the name of her Party, (whose membership must be justifiably aggrieved at such a ploy), not the speak of how she has rendered her Cabinet a troupe of “invisible men and women” (following her lead as the “Invisible woman” and political “Cheshire cat” of the campaign – it’s quite extraordinary, I say, that she has adopted the slogan “Forward Together”, when her whole campaign is a one-woman band.
That nails the truth – for sure.
Danny Kaye, “Hans Christian Anderson”, “Oh, the King is in the altogether now, altogether now……”. It must be on Youtube or somewhere.
As indeed it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMsgAuvEIBc I used to love this when I was a kid but I must say, it’s not quite so much fun living through it as an adult π May’s is indeed the altogether, but altogether, is altogether the most remarkable manifesto I have ever seen π Still, we probably shouldn’t dwell on the idea of any of our glorious leaders in the altogether π
Late post. ‘Tory Togetherness’ is an oxymoron. Conservative political ideology is essentially solipsistic.
These “proposals” will not and cannot work for the simple reason: VPN (virtual private network). Used by companies & individuals. Example: BBC’s iplayer only allows access to those in the Uk with a UK IP address. Solution to those outside the UK: VPN to UK ISP – & you pop out into the UK with IP address. Reverse will work. May-hem with these proposals shows her tech illiteracy.
Tech, most of the time, will always beat politicos. If lawyers still can’t get to grips with copyright & piracy after 30-odd years of trying – what hope a bunch of know-nothing Tories led by May. Keep in mind – gov down-sizing – I’d be surprised, GCHQ excepted, if they even employ somebody that can wire a plug π
