Sustainability is smaller than the rest.
Its far more important than anything else.
GDP – well, there will be more recessions. people will go bankrupt. loose their houses.
Employment – People will lose their jobs, companies will automate. Mass redundancies.
Well-Being – People can be sad. People can be happy. A nation might end up at war, many 1000’s might die…. but, 1000’s more might be liberated.
Thats life…part of being human, trying to get along, there will be winners and loosers. However:
Sustainability….. Screw this one up, and we all die.
Crop failures, Starvation, Mass extinction… really nothing else matters at all, other than to achieve this goal of sustainability. The governments of the world really should be getting together now and sorting out this problem of global climate change…. I’m talking about massive amounts of speculative investments in fringe technologies, like LFTR and fusion reactors…. it might not work, and lots of money might be lost. But, if we don’t make these risks, then we might end up all dead anyhow.
Small ca be beautiful remember – massively influential book in my life longer ago than I now want to remember. Read as a sixth former I think when it first came out
Dear Mr Murphy,
To me as a non-expert this is root and branch and a breath of wonderful fresh air, and I am forwarding some of it to my accountant (who complains about HMRC), and various caveman and women who mistake the Network for that other so-called ‘Alliance’, and therefore gives them something to chew on too!
Many thanks
I would argue the objectives are Sustainability and Well-being. Growth should/could be an element of creating a sustainable economy and full employment an element of Well-being.
That should make planing an economy much easier!!!
