I mentioned the possibility of a new book a month ago.
As I said then, on 22 April I asked my wife and elder son (who was staying with us) whether I should write a new book. The conversation took place during our evening meal. They said I should.
Almost immediately after that conversation, I checked my emails while watching the early evening news programmes and was a little surprised to find a completely unsolicited invitation from a major publisher inviting me to write for them, or at least to discuss doing so.
Discussions then progressed, and I was asked to make a detailed proposal. That was submitted yesterday. In the twenty-six page submission, I outline an idea that I have never explored before in the way that I am now proposing to do.
My hope is that this publisher will say yes, but if they don't, the idea will go elsewhere. I like it. It's a story that, I think, will be worth telling, and which would not be told here. That's the reason for writing a book.

I’m not sure books, at least standalone books, are worth doing these days. They can go out of date quickly and readership is declining.
A better idea IMO is to put the material on a website as a more dynamic, flexible resource. A website can of course be a complement to a book.
We will have to disagree.
Books and websites serve very different purposes.
I’ve just ordered Madame Bovary, Jude The Obscure, Nicholas Nickleby and Walden. I think books can carry powerful messages through the ages

I don’t think Richard is about to become the next Flaubert although he may surprise us. I’m talking of course about non-fiction on issues most of consume these days online.

It’s about the way the clothing industry in Leicester has been more or less closed down recently, with a lot of job losses.
