As many here will know, I resigned from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales in March this year because of their aggressive, intimidatory and threatening behaviour.
My membership ceased on 4 April 2024.
I was, therefore, a little surprised to receive this yesterday:
I have now asked them to:
1) Explain precisely why this total failure of internal controls within the ICAEW has happened because nothing else can explain this.
2) Explain how their accounts can be true and fair if they cannot accurately collect membership fees from those who might (and might not) owe them.
3) Confirm how many other people have received demands for payments that they do not owe?
And remember, these are the people who think that they are fit to regulate much of the accounting profession in the UK, despite which they can't even work out who their members are or get their invoicing right. Is anyone surprised that I feel better off without them?

I always check the origin of emails with invoices attached and have uncovered several attempts to scam me.
This is real
Looks like someone at the ICAEW forgot to cancel your auto-renewal when you resigned, if you had one in place, that is. If you didn’t, then this is poor.
Interesting how we interpret things differently…
I would interpret “Your 2025 payment has been processed and you can now download your invoice”
as
” We have taken your payment and you can now download an invoice for your records”
But seems they are giving you notice that a payment is due which is better.
But still lousy admin and lousy customer experience.
Sadly not unusual. When I resigned from the Labour Party. I asked for deletion of my membership data & email.
(I know they could hold “elector” data about me but it wasnt that). Then much later they emailed me about a big data breach they had suffered (using the unique disposable Labour email address they should have deleted. That issue is the subject of an ongoing mass action legal case. GDP is a bit of a joke IMHO.

I got one as well, despite not having paid them yet.
Very strange, but it does seem to be genuine, given it had my name and membership number on it.
I checked. They have not charged me as yet although they suggest they have.
I am a Life Member and for which I paid nothing due to old age and length of membership – ICAEW seem to be up to date with that as I have heard nothing from them except, a few years ago, to receive a (meaningless) certificate (a year late) of 50 years of membership. Generally I found them difficult to deal with and equally found their own internal standards far below the standards that they expected of members.

One of those accidentally on purpose ‘oops sorry, our mistake, but let’s hope not all of you remember or can be bothered to hassle us (and we will make it so) to get you money back
This looks suspicious to me. If you hover over the ‘download invoice’ button what address do you get? It may well be a genuine mistake but it has several scam red flags e.g. a confirmation of a payment that hasn’t taken place.

I mean there is good evidence from declarations on youtube, companies house and bluesky that you say that you are a chartered accountant.

You can amend them – BlueSky has such a function. Companies House has to respond to edit requests according to the ICO. Youtube can handle a profile change.
